PAGE IO - WATERLDO W. WWI WY tt. tttttts Melodoe Martinuk Chroncile Staff Negotiations are underway which could lead to a significant expansion for one of Waterloo's newest industries, Blouse Metal Products Ltd. Blouse president A.M. Schipper said his company is currently negotiating with an American firm for the license to manufac ture one of its patented surgical instruments. He would not idem tify the company. Schipper expects a decision on the project to be made by this summer, and added a determin- ing factor will be whether Blouse receives sufficient government support. "This will result in an increase in employment. It could become quite extensive, depending on how one wants to take it. It will involve warehousing. distribution. more people in manufacturing," Schip- per said. Blouse Metal Products has a regular employment level of 24. Schipper noted the Canadian surgical equipment market is worth approximately $50 million annually. While almost 100 per- cent of surgical implements used in the country today are imported. in 1958, 98 percent were mitnufac- tured here. Blouse Metal moved from Woodstock to its new 12,000 square foot plant on Dearborn Place Just five months ago. Since moving, he said, the company has experienced a 20 percent increase in sales, "even though we've been too busy to expand our customer base. But the customers are here, we know they are. We've put feelers out." "There is much more of an opportunity in this area than there was in Woodstock. When people think about Waterloo, they think high technology. If you are a machine shop in Waterloo, they think high precision. which is what we are." "But when you're a machine shop in Woodstock, people always think heavy equipment. automo- tive parts. which we are not," explained Schipper. Although the machine shop had been located in Woodstock for the past five and a half years, it is actually an old K-W company which traces its roots back to 1932, when " was the Blouse Shank Company. owned by the Blouse family, Schipper said.
