PAGE 8 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1984 | 1 Kathy Hammond You‘ve been stuffing yourself with all the Christmas goodies; lots of sugar, cholesterol and plenty of calories. You loved every minute of it. Tomorrow the new you. Whenever too much food is eaten and people have a few days off work, there is a surge of joggers around town. Those who‘d like to work off the Christmas pudding, take to the roads. This is a dangerous time for joggers, though, particularly novice joggers. The weather is unpredictable as well as sidewalk or road conditions. If there is snow and sidewalks are not shovelled, many joggers literally take to the roads. According to The Fitness Bulletin (a Torontoâ€" based fitness fact sheet), a 1979 insurance company study showed that out of a total 60 accidents involving joggers and automobiles, the joggers were found at fault in about oneâ€"third of the collisions. Another third were due to driver negligence or impairment. (The other third was not explained.) Of the 60 joggers included in the study, 30 were killed. So many times during the winter 1 recall having to come to a sliding halt, especially when driving on roads just out of town, when a jogger on my side of the road became too aggressive and continued jogging away from the shoulder. 1 can appreciate a jogger‘s dilemma once winter hits and plowed roads make the going much narrower. I don‘t appreciate when a jogger does not yield way to play it safe. A few general rules of the road should be observed by all joggers, if you want to keep, not only active, but alive and kicking. 1. Most important rule; try at all times to avoid the road to begin with. Outdoor tracks, parks or golf courses are ideal for jogging and will help prevent any knee or leg injuries, 65 University Ave. East (at Weber) Waterioo _ 884â€"1310 PDR Picture Framing & Gallery we are open: Mondayâ€"Thursday 9â€"6 Fridays 9â€"9 Saturdays 9â€"5:30 10" to 530"° Aan Inâ€"Stock Prints, Etc. 15" to 50"° aln Framed Pictures 707 112% King St. S. At least keep to the sidewalks. â€" _ 2. If the sidewalks are not clear and you insist on running on the shoulder of the road, run on the same side as approaching traffic. You will see the cars coming and will have plenty of time to react if a dangerous situation arises. Be especially cautious while jogging up the crest of a hill, because you won‘t be given much reaction time if a car comes barreling over. 3. Try to avoid night jogging. Dusk in particular is the riskiest time of the day for road accidents. The eyes need time to adjust to the changing light. If you do jog at night pay attention to what you wear. â€"Highly visible colors like orange and yellow are best. Fluorescent strips can be bought and attached to your hat and shoes. 4. Obey road signals. Many joggers do not want to interrupt their jog, so they disregard traffic lights and signs. When the jogger becomes fatigued and anxious to head home, he may not look before crossing a street, but only listen to the road sounds. Wind or wearing a hat will muffle oncoming sounds. Always stop (jog on the spot) and look before making a move. 5. Remember the weather. Don‘t assume that because your traction is good that the vehicles on the road will have good braking abilities. Rain and snow affect the driver‘s handling capabilities, as well as the driver‘s vision. Avoid roads when conditions are 6. Don‘t hog the road. When running with a partner or a group run one behind the other in single file for maximum safety. You should be able to speak loudly enough while running anyway. _ PR & â€" _ New Year‘s at "The Inn" * PREMIERE _ WINTER MEETING PACKAGE @ "VMarerroo T ’\ & $46.50 475 King St. N. 884â€"0220 _ Waterioo _ == 2 _ _ _ s _ a _ CALL OUR CORPORATE SALES OFFICEâ€"FOR FURTHER DETAILS 884â€"0220 EXT. 502 __________ ‘WArERLOO INN, 1 New Year‘s Day New Year‘s Eve New Year‘s The Waterloo County Board of Education V V Night School Courses will be offered at KITCHENERâ€"WATERLOO COLLEGIATE AND VOCATIONAL SCHOOL 787 King Street West, Kitchener Register at the school, 7â€"9 p.m. Tuesday, January 8 and Thursday, January 10 Classes begin: the week of January 14 all courses are 10 weeks unless indicated Fees payable on the first night of the course supplies fee applies to some courses Typewriting 1 â€" 20 weeks luesday »OU Woodworking (basic) Tuesday $50 Word Processing (one night per week) Weekday *using dedicated word processing equipment nights $160 CREDIT Courses will be offered at Cameron Heights Collegiate and Gait Collegiate beginning February 5.
