PAGE 16 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 26. 1984 Chronicle Staff Although ‘disappointing news,"‘ last week‘s sale of the former Majestic building doesn‘t spell disaster for the proposed Waterâ€" works Theatre, group founder Linda Carson says. Since last summer Carson has worked to establish a 150â€"seat live theatre on Princess Street in Uptown, and, after a year, she awaits word from the federal and provincial governments on her funding requests. After hearing of the building‘s sale to Sonia and Bernie Adlys, owners of the Kent Hotel, Carson examined her grant applications, to find that the "sale doesn‘t appear to make any concrete difference. At this point, the holdâ€"up seems to be the money, courtesy of the numerous levels of government."‘ Carson had hoped grants from the two senior levels of governâ€" ment would cover 60 per cent of the approximately $460,000 she needed to buy the building and renovate it. She added there is at least one other site in Uptown Waterloo that would be suitable for a theatre, NEW YEAR‘S EVE PARTY For more information and TICKET RESERVATIONS â€" CALL Waterworks not dead yet _ but Carson won‘t be daing any looking until she hears from the government. â€" â€" While she‘s starting to lose patience, Carson vows there‘s no way she‘s going to abandon the project now. "I‘ve said this many times â€" there‘s no reason to give up, until they say we don‘t have the grant," said Carson. "I‘ve got to see it through. If they decide next month this is just what the region needs, and I‘ve quit, I may have blown the region‘s chances of ever having a theatre like this. ‘‘My grandchildren may have to carry on the project for me." _ Especially frustrating for Carâ€" son is that government officials have told her the theatre concept is a good one, but won‘t say whether they‘ll support it, or even indicate when a decision will be made. ‘"I‘ve been given no concrete explanations about the delay," she said. "I‘ve had far too many promises (of an answer). The last promise I had was that I‘d know for sure by May 30, 1984 â€" that was a long time ago and 1 still haven‘t heard." Historically much more important than Christmas (which was abolished by the Puriâ€" tans and never really revived), the Scottish New Year‘s festival is a great occa@sion marked by visiting, feasting and customs based on the principle that ‘"a good beginning makes a good ending." Just as the Scottish settlers of the Waterloo Region would have celâ€" ebrated this time of year, Doon Pioneer Village will do so at A Guid New Year‘ party Friday, Dec. 28 at 8 This Hogmanay ceiâ€" lidgh (party or getâ€" together) will be held in the Township Hall at the Village and will feature refreshments like Black Bun, Shortâ€" bread, Ginger Wine and a Hot Cider Punch (tea & coffee), and traditional forms of Scottish ‘entertainâ€" ment. As those present at a ceilidgh traditionally ‘‘join in," there will be opportunities for those in attendance to particâ€" ipate through commuâ€" nity singing (songs like Auld Lang Syne), reciâ€" tations â€" or in any other way that strikes one‘s fancy‘! As space is limited â€" tickets ($5/person) must be reserved in advance. This may be done by telephoning Doon at 893â€"4020. Doon Pioneer Village will stage a New Year‘s Party for Chilâ€" dren Monday, Dec. 31 while adults look around the Village. An afternoon (1:30â€" 4: 30) of fun and amuseâ€" ment has been planned for children of all ages, including sleigh or wagon (depending on weather) rides, 19th century games, a treaâ€" sure hunt and refreshâ€" (Continued on page 31) se 7ommiD Anctor may 401 4 24 688â€"4302 _ MAT.
