Fans of the former Horseshoe Restaurant can finally rest easy â€" construction of the new restaurant is set to begin this week and owner Louis Deligianâ€" nis expects to be back in business early next year. Melodee Martinuk Chronicle Staff ‘‘*Everyday 1| meet people who say ‘Louis, when are you going to open again‘ ... I get phone calls at home from people who say ‘I miss your fish and chips, I miss your breakfasts," * said Deâ€" ligiannis, who is widely known as Horseshoe Louis. Not long to wait for Horseshoe‘s opening Early this summer, much to the chagrin of *‘*Horseshoe‘"‘ Louis Deligiannis (right) and his brother Ken look over blueprints for the new Horseshoe Dining Lounge, which is expected to open early next year. his regular customers, Deligiannis was forced to close the old Horseâ€" shoe Restaurant on Erb Street, when his lease on the building expired. He had operated that restauâ€" rant for 15 years. Even then, he was talking about opening the Horseshoe II, and he didn‘t waste any time getting the new restaurant going. Recently Deligiannis and his brother Ken, a partner in this venture, purchased a new buildâ€" ing, a former gas staâ€" tion at Regina and Erb Streets. And last week a major hurdle was passed when council approved preliminary architectural designs for the reâ€"born Horseâ€" Deligiannis plans exâ€" tensive renovations to the building now on the site. A 1,400â€"squareâ€" foot extension will be added to the west side, bringing the building out to the Regina Street property line. The dinâ€" ing area will be raised and have seating for some 70 people, almost triple the capacity of the old restaurant. There will be a bar and an outside ‘""beer garâ€" den‘‘ is planned. shoe Dining Lounge ‘"‘It‘s going to be nice," he said. ‘"The nicest building in Waâ€" terloo." So people will be sure they‘re at the Horseâ€" shoe, horseshoe deâ€" signs will be featured in the interior decor and a horseshoeâ€" shaped window will acâ€" cent the building‘s front facade. Other than the physiâ€" cal changes, Deligianâ€" nis promises the new Horseshoe retain the flavor of the old, feaâ€" turing the same menu and specials of the original, although he couldn‘t guarantee the prices will remain unâ€" changed. Deligiannis estiâ€" mates it will cost apâ€" proximately $250,000 to open the restaurant, plus the $100,000 he has already invested in the property. "I took a twoâ€"month trip to see my parents in Greece, but I‘ve been back for a month and a half and it‘s driving me crazy. I‘ve got to do something. "At the old restauâ€" rant, people were always saying I worked too many hours, but I like it. I enjoy the customers and I‘m happy when I‘m work ing," Deligiannis con cluded. Although Deligiannis had received offers to work in other restauâ€" rants, he said, there is no other place he‘d rather be. "I wanted to stay here. Everybody knows me and I know all the customers. I‘ve lived here all my life and I wanted to stay." he said. And it‘s obvious Deliâ€" giannis is more than ready to get behind the grill once again.
