Carroll said that, although men have enjoyed advanâ€" tages in the past because of sex stereotyping and biased attitudes, statistics show that women are gradually making inroads into business, politics, the professions and nonâ€"traditional occupations. She pointed to the enroiment figures of Wilfrid Laurier University‘s business and economics program which show that 52 per cent of students are female. The fact that 26 women were elected to Parliament in the recent federal election, six of them named ministers in the cabinet of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, is also encouraging, she feels. Pat Arbucile Chronicle Staft Women may be a "disadvantaged majority‘* now, but they are standing on the edge of an important and exciting future, says Waterloo Mayor Marjorie Carroll. ‘"I believe in this 20th century that women are very wellâ€"equipped to solve the problems of mankind," Carroll said in an address last week to a meeting of Kâ€"W Women in Networking. Still, the Waterloo mayor acknowledged that, as ‘*breakthrough‘"* women, she and many members of her audience are in a difficult position. Not only are they more visible on the job, but they are also considered as _____ invites applications for School Board Trustee ‘for the City of Kitchener The Waterloo County Board of Education is seeking a person to fill a Trustee vacancy running to November 30, 1985. Not one iota of their rights should be abridged on the basis of sex. We have to learn to view each other as individuals, separate and independent of each other, each with a right to selfâ€"determination and fulfillment," she said. "I have always operated as an individual and have reacted with astonishment if anyone does not treat me as a selfâ€"reliant individual." Carroll feels that women posses many qualities which will help them respond effectively to future challenges. Besides being biologically stronger, the mayor feels women are more resilient, resistant to disease and more sensitive to their environment and other people. In politics, women "fit the bill as well, if not better, than men‘"‘ because they work harder, have more emphathy for people and have the constitutional strength to perform the required duties, Carroll added. Admitting that she loves her job, Carroll puts in about 50 or 60 hours weekly fulfilling her duties as mayor of Waterloo. Often, this means juggling her three main areas of responsibility: initiating and setting policy; administration of the municipality; public relations. While female politicians and public figures can be useful in serving as role models and in using their positions of influence to help other women gain a stronger foothold in the labor market, Carroll warned her audience that they must be willing to help themselves to achieve their objectives. She also urged them to become more aware of what is happening within their community by attending city council meetings, visiting the local city hall and by informing themselves about the issues through the W Tu T500 “Bgfl §1.
