Strenuous exercise may induce anxiety neurosis la mental functional dis- order) due to biochemical changes which occur during intense exercising. The changes Anay cause a rise in blood lactate, a normal metabolism by-product, to dangerous levels in some people. For these people. most of them women, intense’exertion may aggravate the anxieties which are already present, including insomnia, breathlessness, chest pains. ner- vousness and fatigue. These unfortunate side effects cause the people who suffer them to Exercising is not for everyone. Maybe that's not what you want to hear after you‘ve signed up an exercise progam somewhere. Or maybe it's exactly what you wanted to hear, so you can delay or postpone fitness for yet another year. No matter how expensive a particular club or program may be, or how expensive and well-researched the equipment may be, a weekly or bi-weekly exercise session may not be enough m keep you fit, nor be the proper method for you in particular. If you are more than 20 pounds overweight, you should diet and control your eating habits before starting an exercise program of high intensity. The exertion required to push and pull your present weight may be too taxing on your already burdened heart and vascular system. Many exercises turn fatty tissues into hard muscle, making the excess weight difficult to get rid of, especially for those over the 35 year' mark. Those who are overweight and do not stick to a diet at home often become early dropouts from their program. The quitting becomes a pyschological defeat as well as a physical one. which in itself can lead to overeating and weight gain. " ling St. t. at hadou. “than. 579-195. A _ A _ Medical research has proven that this increased anxiety. brought on by the higher levels of blood lactate has a definite physical cause. Compared to "normal" people, those suffering from anxiety and its ‘side effects after exercising have a definite set of characteristics. They are unable to maintain strong handgrips; they react early to noise levels as well as light intensity and heat; without any external discomforts their breathing rate quickly increases; they sigh more; even with light exercise they have higher pulse rates. Without medical supervi- sion exercise can be harmful. The third type of person who should be wary of exercise are those who have not done anything physical for years. Sound familiar? For these people, unexpected fatigue may set in after a workout. This is due to a biological law known " oxygen debt. This permits exertions beyond the body'simmediate capa- bilities for oxygen intake. The body compen- sates for the insufficient oxygen by slowing down on many vital body processes. Once the exertion has stopped, however, the needed oxygen is gradually restored and replenished. The best way to survive this period of chemical fatigue is to slow down whatever it is you’re doing too much of, and breathe deeply, preferably in front of an open window. The fatigue will go away as the level of fitness is increased. Stop and start activities are adviseable it you have suffered from or do suffer from plain laziness and want to become fit. Brisk walking, cycling, or jogging are goo activities because they can be controlled by you. When the fatigue has gone or is at least controllable. you can venture into something a little more strenuous for a longer duration. Credit: Cameron Heights Cl.
