As a re- suit, the veterans who had paid for their trip Three generations of local French people were out in great num- bers to welcome us at the little village of Bemiere Sur Mer. Flag poles bearing Canadian tlags lined the street and signs saying, "Bienvenue aux Li- berateurs" hung from buildings. We were in- were not given any special distinction at the ceremonies. They were disappointed, even angry. There were oftieiais and their entourage and media people everywhere and. of course front ind; of 0 row centre They wanted to cheer the Canadians but there was really no opportunity. After a commemoration at the beach memorial, the entire proceedings were devoted to speeches by the poiiti- cians. Space of Our . Own Normandy. is a heau- tiful. treed, hilly farm- ing area. There are no signs of the heavy fighting that took place there except for the occasional gun empla- cement and the ceme- teries. The people of Normandy. however. remember those young men who landed from wave tossed small craft. crossed their wide, sandy beaches, and fought through their villages and farm fields to restore their freedom. Their Chile dren place nowers at the feet of cemetery stones engraved with maple leaves. Streets are named for regi- ments of the Canadian Army, and any Cana- dian is greeted with instant respect. It is to be hoped that such remembrance can he fostered among our own people for the sac- rffiees that gave Can- ada such an honored place in the world. Such awareness was evident on the faces of the members of a Bar; and“ the memorial service at My Sat let on the European Itinerary.
