"I‘ve been working on my volley quite a bit." Young used the volley late in her quarterâ€"final match as she finished off her Waterioo rival, Carol Culik, 6â€"3, 6â€"4. Culik fought back gamely in that match, but Young proved to be stronger and more experienced. _ Young went on to beat Jennifer Sheppard 6â€"0, 6â€"2 in her semiâ€"final match. Hall lost the first set of the men‘s final as Saigeon consistently hit wellâ€"placed, unreturnable foreâ€" "I could only be effective if 1 kept the ball deep," said Hall, "and that‘s what I worked at in the second and third sets." Jill Thomson and Grant Cortliand, both of Toronto, took the mixed doubles, winning 6â€"1, 3â€"6, 6â€"4 over Hatch and Derek Thomas, also of Toronto‘s Gary Meanchos comâ€" bined with Correia to win the men‘s doubles.
