.m: Hesith init conducts s seminal on hestg We‘re often last to know about our own hearing loss Mark Bryson Chronicle Staff In today‘s fastâ€"paced world it is often easy to forget the most important thing â€" you and your health. o . According to public health nurse Marion Kelterborn of the Waterioo Regional Health Unit, something often overlooked is a person‘s hearing. "Two million Canadians suffer from hearing loss. If affects 60% of people over 65. Therefore it is important to go out and talk to people about their hearing, especially the elders," said Kelâ€" terborn. The person who develops a gradual hearing loss may be completely unaware of this and therefore is the last to know. There are definite telltale signs to help you determine whether you have a problem. Conducting a seminar at the Adult Recreation Centre, Kelterborn informed seniors on how to detect hearing loss and what to do about it. The presentation featured an inâ€"depth look at common hearing problems and was capped off with a 25 minute film entitled, "Curse Not the Deaf." The film dealt with the problems a person goes through before get@ng a hearing M ie ce dEAAA nAE e Immediate family and acquaintances notice that you are not responding appropriately or not listening. e You hear but you don‘t understand. f e People report that you only hear what you want to hear. e It is difficult to hear in noisy groups. e Television and radio are more difficult to hear. aid. a ut I¢ y /7/1’//// ;‘7 -;>7 i‘v‘)"( ww‘ * â€"4 f @1 2 s Even if you think your bearing is excellent, practicing simple rules will keep it that way. e Have your hearing tested once a year. e Keep your ears clean without putting anything into your ear canal. o ify;uare exposed to high levels of noise, have your hearing tested more frequently . e Make sure hearing aids are selected by a competent audiologist, as an improper hearing aid may be of no benefit and worse, may hinder rather than help one‘s hearing ability. _ Hearing tests will be helo Thursday Aug. 2 at the Adult Recreation Centre.
