fPerfect blend to suit all tastes Melogdee Martinuk Chromcie Staft *‘ This shop couldn‘t be more aptiy named. It‘s called Aroma, and the first thing you notice as you pass through its doors is just that â€" the rich, roasted aroma of freshiyâ€"ground cof fee For coffee lovers, it‘s paradise In this newlyâ€"opened little cafe on the main leveli of Uptown Waterioo‘s The Atrium, Renata Bartels works her magic custom roasting and biending all types of gourmet coffees as well as bliending berbal and more conventional teas "I‘m the only one in Kâ€"W that does this 1 import all the beans green from all ovér the world and roast them in small batches right on the premises the night before | sell them so the coffees are the freshest available,"‘ said Barâ€" tels Bartels carries 15 different types of coffee at Aroma, the most unique of which is the Celebes Kalossi from Indonesia, $12 a pound, which only she in all of Canada selis. ‘‘We sell them by the country (Latin Ameri can. Arabian, African. Asian) and by the roast (light. medium, full, heavy, and dark), but. we encourage customers to blend their own â€" the combinations are endless,"" she said. In addition, Aroma stocks 11 different rare teas. from India, Sri Lanka, China, Formosa and Japan, herbal teas which Bartels blends herself by "combining various herbs and spicing them up," and specialty fruit jpuices from Nia gara. While this shop may be a new venture for Bartels. coffee isn‘t. This Austrianâ€"born woman is a familiatr. and populat. feature at the Waterloo Farmers Market each week. where she has been selling her choice coffees and teas for the past three years Bartels explained opening Aroma is a ~natu ral ouigrowth" of her longâ€"time interest in good food: an interest which was developed in Europe where she worked "in the hotel and restaurant business. training in everything from cooking to management .‘ > After arriving in Canada three years ago, Bartels started her coffec business because she "couldn‘t find a place here to get a good cup of coffee. a place where 1 could go in the afternoun and just sit and relax. In Europe coffee is a very cultural thing. and the people there care about their coffee." s 4 p.m.â€"12 p.m. pt -.veo\“" $ 885â€"2740 Sat. 4 p.m.â€"2 a.m. PICKâ€"UP, EATâ€"IN OR HOME DELIVERY Tues.â€"Thurs. 11:30â€"12:00 ‘"The Smaller Panzerotti with pepperoni & mushrooms 1.99 Sun. 4 p.m.â€"10 p.m. Roasting the coffee beans and biending the teas were skilis which Bartels taught herseif, through experimentation and sampling. them and their procedures, bought an antique roaster and some beans,"" she recalled. "It took a (ew attempts before I got it â€" I had to learn how the beans react to temperature, stop at different stages, test and sample because each bean can be quite different."‘ Bartels® aim in opening Aroma has been to bring a "little European atmosphere to Water lo0"; create a meeting place, a social environâ€" ment where business people and students can sit down and just think about the day The shop has a very homeâ€"like, relaxed atmosphere, having onty fourâ€"orâ€"five small pine tables where customers can enjoy their coffee or tea while soft classical music plays in the backâ€" ground As well as the beverages, Bartels offers break{ast treats like croissants and muffins twhich she makes herself), ~"decadent" cakes and a line of "light savories" such as quiche and tea sandwiches. The shop will feature daily specials, like an "English breakfast" complete with scones topped by cream and jam and a cup of tea Although Aroma only opened last week, Barte‘s said business has been excellent, with her farmers market customers tracking her to the new locationâ€" ‘"Many of them can‘t make it to the market all the time and it‘s more convenient for them to come here." she said Currently theâ€" shop is open â€" Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.,. but Bartels plans to remain open in the evenings as the shop becomes better known And even if Aroma is the success it promises to be. Bartels said she doesn‘t plan to open other operations elsewhere in the area. "I might expand in the building. but 1 don‘t want to get into a big situwation â€"I want a small, personal place where 1 can doâ€" it all myself." Incidentally, Bartels advises that the key to a good cup of coffee is to use only freshlyâ€"ground voffee. and carefully measure the amounts of coffee and water used. Beans should be bought in small quantities each week and stored in an airâ€"tight jar in the freezer until used "I visited all the roasters in Toronto, watched Fri. 11:30â€"2 a.m. +93 Y Summer Day Camps Sneakers ‘n Samiches e adventure packed day camp e 6â€"12 year olds e bus trps, swimming. gym, crafts e compuler option Adventure Camp 3â€"6 year olds tull & hait program arts, cralfts. swimming. local trips qualitied preschoo! staff Specialized programs for 3â€"15 year olds e August 13 â€" August 31 â€" fun packed weeks e Renate Bartels, owner of the newlyâ€"opened Aroma coffee specialty shop, roasts her coffee beans daily to make sure the product she sells is the freshest available in the Twin Cities.
