WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20. 1964 The Sounds of Summer, Waterloo's summer festival can-avaganza. hopes to recreate an atmosphere through music, an atmosphere which has been absent from this area for some 30 years. Festival organizers hope to return to the glory days of the Thieie era. Professor Charles F. Thiele was the man responsible for starting the Waterloo Band Festival in 1932. Crowds of up to 20,000 participated in the gala, which unfortunately ran into financial difrieulties and ended in 1958. The festivities will kick off on Friday, June 22 at the three Waterloo shopping malls. Waterloo Town Square will be featuring the Waterloo Band at 7 p.m., the Over the Hill Gang will be at Westmount and the Beirdo Bros. will appear at Conestoga Mall. There will also be a "Giant Jazz Bash" Friday night. Two local jazz bands will be appearing at the event. The bash, to be held at Seagram Gym, will start at 7 p.m. with the Dukes of Jazz and will be followed up by the Sensational Jazz Band. "Ali' 8 pan. performance, at Waterloo Town Square. by the Sweet Adelines, will round out the evening activities. -- A 10:30 a.m. parade will start off Saturday's events. The parade will feature many area drum corps. Classic automo- biles will be filing down King Street aiding in the nostaligic theme of the weekend. The afternoon will be family oriented with all kinds of events for the kids. At 4 pan., the Beirdo Bros. will put on the "Teddy Bear Pienic." The set will bring back childhood memories for everyone. The big band sound of Johnny Kostigiane and his 14-piece orchestra will perform in the newly opened Seagram museum. Kostigiane was a fixture at the old Leisure Lodge dance palace for some 35 years. " Join forces and perform the 1812 Over- Sinday’s iiiusical activities -wii1 get underway at 12: 30 with the K-W Communi- ty Orchestra performing in Waterloo Park. Following the Orchestra, will be perfor- mances, on the hour. by the Kitchener Musical Society, the Twin City Harmon- izers. the Wellington Winds, the Regional Police Band and the Waterloo-Oxford Jazz Choir. Throughout the afternoon. the Humber College Centennial Showcase will be fea- tured in the park. The performance. entitled "An Ontario Celebration," is a musical tribute to Ontario's 200th birth- day. The climax of the evening will be after the 6:30 performance of the Waterloo Concert Band. The four concert bands will pool their resources and perform a “Trio ute to Sousa." The approximately 200 musicians will perform Stars and Stripes, Washington Post and Thunder. The evening will close out with an interfaith service at 7: 30 p.m. The service will feature an old-fashioned hymn sing-a- long.
