PAGE 8 - WATERLOO CHRONICLE. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13. Of the many injuries occurring from exercising, shin splints are one of the most common. Athletes of all expertise have a varying degree of shin splint some time in their life, if they're not careful. If you've ever felt a sharp and nagging pain down the lower front shin, and don't re- member scraping or bruising yourself, you may have had a shin splint. Though the name shin splint implies a splintering or damage to the shin bone, there are several explanations as to what the cause of pain may be. Here are a few possible condi- tions: 2. The membrane between the two bones of the lower leg have become irritated. 3. The tendon may be torn from the bone. 4. A hairline fracture may have occurred on one of the bones of the lower leg. 5. A muscle spasm may have occurred. 6. A muscle imbalance may have occurred due to improper running techniques or improper walking. 1. Your arch may have dropped, irritating the tendons of the lower leg. No inatter whit _the cause of your personal shin splint. the best medicine is preventive medicine. One way to avoid shin splints is to switch from a hard to a soft running surface whenever possible. Grass is the ideal surface as it helps cushion the foot enabling the foot and leg to absorb the stress of pounding on the ground without undue damage. If, however, you prefer to jog on a hard surface. especially a track, try to switch direction of your jog often to put less stress on the shin of the inside leg. s "'cct"?e, C0-22 , CO-' 0 Auto-reserve walkman twp Cassette Mayer With d lockmq " /REW and Dolby Norse Heductmn RC-770 o AM-FM Stereo Mus .9 shun-wave baodr, . Look at your shoes. If they're worn and have no visible arch or heel support, you'll need new shoes. Buy a good pair. No $9.95 specials. A good tractioned, and cushioned sole and heel is necessary. Heel and arch support are vital. If your shoes are not ready for the garbage yet, a sponge pad placed in the heel of the shoe will help absorb stress from running until you buy a new pair.- Improper and insufficient leg warm- ups are mainly the cause of shin splints. Because Jogging, running, jumping, or walk- ing all tend to strengthen the muscles at the back of the legs, and not the muscles in front, a muscle imbalance occurs. The obvious answer is to strengthen the muscles at the front of the legs. A good exercise to include in your warm-up is the old reliable foot flexor, but this time using weights. The idea is to flex your foot up and down against resistance. If you do not have weights to strap on, sit with your feet dangling and have a friend hold your feet while you try to lift and flex them. Three sets of 10 each should increase strength and prevent shin splints. . _ If, however. you're sitting at home with legs raised and ice bags on your shins, you're probably more interested in a shin splint cure. Simply put, you must stop using your leg or legs. Not so easy you say, but you cannot "run out" a shin splint, though many try. Any activity using the legs can be so painful that a quick, effective treatment is crucial. Rest your legs. If you feel you have to exercise, switch to swimming as the buoyancy of the water will not harm the shin splint. Above all avoid cortisone treatments. Ar. though the shots provide temporary relief, repeated shots may damage your connective tissues and prolong the cure. MIN R0770 . EiWoTmCtttaTtqEAmNALOF Other “T he.
