Canadian Brass Flying high brass band sets to land at Centre in the Square PAGE 20 - WATERLOO CHRONICLE. WEDNESDAY. JUNE 13, 1984 Coral Andrews Chronicle Special The Canadian Brass, who play Centre In The Square Saturday, really have something to blow their collective horn about. According to trombonist Gene Watts, this is the first time in 14 years the critics have raved about them. Why? Two trumpets, one French horn, one tuba and a trombone, namely Gene's, a top brass band make. Their "over-the-years" overnight suc- cess, could have something to do with their recent date at Toronto's Massey Hall, during the Toronto International Festival. The Brass with their uncanny knack of clever chamber and contemporary melodies mixed with zany visual antics have been wowing appreciative trumpet bards from coast to coast. "This year is quite unique." said Watts in a recent interview. “Musically for the Brass it's really coming together, and it's exciting. Since Martin has joined this makes a difference too." French horn player Martin Hackleman, played with the Vancouver Symphony for two years, and has also played the Mostly Mozart show at New York's Avery Fisher Hall with the New York Philharmonic. “Kile- iéréally A terrific horn player," added Watts. Hackleman is responsible for many solos in the current show, and is a little more reserved than the rest of this rambunctious combo, but he has found his niche and has 'horned' in comfort- ably. The Brass played the Centre several years ago and since then have tripled their pppurartrty, "iihirrk/west album érass in Bérlin, inclining the classic Albnoni Adagio, performed with the FAMILY DINING or TAKE-OUT OPEN MON.-SAT. a A.M.-8 PM. /< CLOSED SUNDAYS ' . “m can son mum" v9 - NOW IN OUR TENTH YEAR - '/ VTHE WMRF 456A Albert St N _ Next to 2ehrs Parkdale Plaza _ 885-0580 - Waterloo We JEFF!†Visa & MustcrCurd “EVERYBODV'S EATING FISH TOAWt - W! In addition to the standard fare of Bach, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, and Gabrieli. the Brass also honor the work of earlier jazz legends Duke Ellington and Fats Waller. "We have a Beatles suite we do with orchestra, but we prefer to do more of our own compositions, and have a couple of interesting things in the works for Saturday. Chuck does most of the funny talking. and one piece we will perform concerns a tribute to the ballet." said Watts. "We used to play with the ballet in the pits (orchestra), so we could never see anything that was going on from underneath. We called a friend at the National (Ballet), and she told us what goes on," he added. "We have the authentic ballet choreography, for this and it should be quite a showpiece. The Braés recently fecorded a live album. at the Ottawa Arts Centre. Future dates include the Hollywood Bowl, and Avery Fisher once again with Mostly Mozart. Then it's off to Germany in the fall to record yet another album. Who has time to relax? "We all have our little joys. Ronald (Romm- class A trumpet) is an avid flyer and grabs that airplane every chance he gets. He used to have a motorcycle, but he had an accident. A short dramatic pause for effect. . . "Oh, he can still walk, but now he figures a plane is much safer." Another laugh. But Ron likely won't need a plane soon. The Canadian Brass in their tip-top musical form. can easily soar on their wings of success.
