PAGE 10 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13. 1984 Actions being considered include the reducâ€" tion of driver training staff from a current 14 to 10 by September of 1985, increased availability of instructors for both inâ€"car and inâ€"class instruction in the evening, on weekends and during the summer months and an extensive promotional campaign to heighten public awareness of the program. No fee increase has been planned at this time. The Waterloo County Board of Education‘s driver training program will have until June of 1985 to improve its costâ€"efficiency. Trustees of _ the board _ decided to continue offering the program to students provided a number of measures, designed to cut costs and attract students, are implemented. Bob Pullin, principal of continuing education, told the board that the proposed changes are designed "to provide a highâ€"quality driver education program to secondary school students at a modest cost to the student and the board and to complete individual student training in a reasonable length of time. We feel driver training is an important skill for all young people to acquire and believe the board should continue to be involved in the program," Pullin said. According to Pullin, the board‘s driver education program had operated smoothly for more than 30 years since it was pioneered at Kâ€"W collegiate in 1948. Two years ago, however, the program ran into trouble. Enrolment dipped 14.4 per cent, government grants for inâ€"car instruction were discontinued and the board was forced for the first time to purchase its own cars. Some of these costs are recovered through government grants for inâ€"class instrucâ€" tion. Trustee John Darling, who supported a motion to continue the program, said that it would be ‘‘callous"‘ to drop it entirely and Trustee Sue Coulter suggested that program officials be given an oppportunity to try their ‘"innovative alternatives‘ before a final decision is made. completed the program revealed that many were particularly unhappy about the long waiting period before ‘they received driver instruction, Pullin said. Normally, there is a backlog of approximately 30 students. Trustee Jacqueline Papke expressed concern that costâ€"cutting measures were being considâ€" ered at such a late date. ‘"‘It bothers me that suddenly you‘ve become efficient in your program when we‘ve decided to close it. It seems kind of after the fact," she said. According to Pullin, costâ€"cutting initiatives have already begun. Driving training staff has been reduced to 12 instructors through attrition and local car dealers have indicated a willingâ€" ness to provide cars free of charge to the board as they did until two years ago. This could result in an annual saving of approximately $32,000. An additional $50,000 in revenue will be gained from the sale of 14 boardâ€"owned cars which will no longer be needed, he said.
