Something that's taken for granted. A toddler or preschooler is so occupied with play he doesn't need added exercise. Just as there are lazy adults, there are lazy children. Children need to be pushed into a healthy active lifestyle. Many parents do not even consider that their child should do exercises or participate in a specific activity solely for the benefits of exercise. They feel their child gets enough exercise playing in the house and getting into everything, or playing about the neighborhood getting into everybody else's things. While a normal, healthy child does indeed get some benefits from play, a child who reads more than plays or sits more than runs, may need parental encouragement to do something ac- tive. Nobody expects you to order your child to the floor and demand push-ups or sit-ups. There are too many enjoyable activities to do with your child that involve exercise. ‘As children get older, the first thing to go is flexibility, I discovered this while having my girls exercise with me. The leg movements they had as infants had been dramatically reduced. They actually felt pain when l stretched‘their leg by pulling their toes in toward their body and flexing their foot. I didn't yank the foot back. I simply pulled gently until they screamed STOP! This was a couple of years ago. After becoming aware of the need for them to exercise, a lot of their infant flexibility has returned. After a couple of years it is not uncommon to hear one ask the other if they'd like to do some exercises. They're constantly approaching me with new exercises they've made up to. quote "teach my ladies." Their new exercises are more in tune with breakdancing so "my ladies" don't get to see them. but I humor them and try them out myself. '199. Teaching your children to walk and walk well is one of the most important aspects of fitness you could do for your child. It takes perseverance. mainly for the parent who must endure the screaming and upstretched arms, before a young child will willingly endure a walk on the strength of his own two feet. When our youngest was two, I did away with the stroller and vowed never to use it again. She screamed as if she were going to die whenever we went on long walks. She didn't die, I didn't use the carriage anymore, and she now walks great distances, running some of the way. Rather than restrict your walk to the city many of the local Conservation areas have a good schedule of weekly walks and hikes geared for the family. The many interesting things to look at the touch help make a young child forget that he has walked a mile or two. Playing games with your children will not only please your child because you are involved and spending time with them. but will stimulate them if you keep the game simple and different each time. The simple game of Simon Says is an ideal form of exercise. Whether Simon says to stretch high into the sky or hop like a bunny, your child will do movements that will aid in improvement of flexibility, dexterity. strength and co-ordina- tion. It's also good to teach your child at an early age as possible about fitness without playing games. Most children are fascinated with their bodies and will listen to the constant reminders of what it takes to have a strong, healthy one. We did this with our kids and it didn't take long for them to start reminding us when we needed exercise or fresh air.
