Martha Hobson of Bluevale finished fifth in the senior girls long jump and will compete in the allâ€"Ontario meet. Regional competition stiff test for area athletes , _ Â¥* § & n 2 n Richard O‘Brien Chronicle Stafft For high school track and field athletes. it‘s that time again. Some talented athletes, like Bluevale colleâ€" giate‘s Lisa Kueneman, have been able to keep going while others, such as WCI‘s Mike Cowan have been put in the unhappy position of having to drop out At a twoâ€"day meet in Chatham that began Friday and served as a qualifier for allâ€"Ontario competition,. Kueneman and her coach Doug Carmichael were uncertain if she‘d be able to run all three events on a sore leg But she did run all three, finishing first in the junior girls 200 metres in 25.6 seconds and third in the 100 and 400. â€" It‘s time for the best among them to compete in the allâ€"Ontario championship,. but there‘s more to it than that. After three weeks of intense competition, they also have to battle their own aches and pains. In doing so, she qualified in all three events to become one of 10 Bluevale athletes to compete in the allâ€"Ontario meet in Etobicoke Friday and Saturday. "I thought I could fight it off." said Kuen eman. "I wanted to get this far. I0s pretty sore now but it‘s all over for a week." Cowap was less fortunate. After becoming the Central Western Ontario junior boys champion a week earlier in Brantford, he had his season end with a pulled muscle when he tried unsucceessâ€" fully to stay behind the long jump line after getting out of step. * However, Waterloo collegiate will be repre sented by four athletes this weekend in Etobi coke. Paul Hewson,. another Bluevale senior,. took the fifth and last qualifyving spot in the triple jump. And Dan Pride was fifth among midgets with the javelin. ~ Bluevale‘s Nick Cipp appears to be the most promising of Waterloo athletes to attend the meet. All along. he has been winning the open boys 2,000 metre steeplechase and he did it once again on Saturday in a time of 5: 56.9 -Cipp also qualified for the senior boys 3,000 by finishing third in 8: 49. Bluevale‘s Val Simpson was second in midget girls javelin with a throw of 29.85 metres. Among senior girls, Martha Hobson was fifth in the long jump as she spanned 5.0 metres and Beth Merikle was sixth in the 800 in 2: 26.4, but qualified for further competition because the secondâ€"place finisher dropped the event Bluevale‘s 4 x 100 relay team of Laura Coppolino, â€" Lisa â€" Bater, Gloria Kiefer and Kueneman was a winner in 50.4 Leanne Pinder scored a first place finish for WCI, winning the senior girls 800 metre event in 2: 17. She was also third in the 1,500 in a time of 4: 43. Angela Pinder was third in the midget girls 800 in 2: 21 and Allison Bryant also excelled for WCL.
