This is the tale of two goals. The only two, in fact, that weren‘t scored at Kitchener Aud last week during the gala Memorial Cup tournament. The absolute in storybook finishes failed to materialize in two areas, however. Unrealized goals, if you will. First one is obvious, the fact Rangers fell one encounter short of winning it all. The second, the one that sparked corridor conversation all week long, was the inability of Laval Voisin phenom Mario Lemieux to get untracked to the level of the oh so lofty reputation that preceded him. The missing ingredients Explaining the first unrealized goal is easy. Rangers, who nipped into the OHL record room with reckless abandon this past season, tried to do to Ottawa what the rest of us would like to do to Ottawa in a political sense â€" deliver the proverbial knee to the groin. And, in a sense, Rangers did that â€" but three nights too early in roundâ€"robin play. When the money was on the line Saturday, 67s proved what many in the house feared, you can beat a very good team some of the time, but certainly not all of the time. That Rangers were unable to wrestle the brass ring from the slick 675 is hardly cause for headâ€"hanging. For nearly all the tournament, Rangers were on the ice what their organization was off, an effective, smoothâ€"running machine. They gave their fans more than their share of excitement (especially in roundâ€"robin play against Kamloops) and should be applauded for their excellent showing as host â€" both on and off the ice. The biggest disappointment of the week â€" more an enigma â€" turned out to be Lemieux. With a total of 133 goals and 149 assists in league play, another 52 points in 14 league playoff matches, and a plane ticket to Pittsburgh as the NHL entry draft‘s plum possession pinned to his jersey since Christmas, he created much if not most of the preâ€"Memorial Cup hype. Physically resembling a larger Mike Bossy, fashioning the grace and fluidity of a Jean Beliveau and the potential for greatness of his hero Wayne Gretzky, Lemieux plain and simply bummed out. On only a rare occasion did he show hints of brilliance â€" interestingly enough, those instances came moments after he had been physically mauled. Hmmmm, another Frank Mahovlich perhaps? Know what they said about Frank, eh? "Whatever you do, don‘t hit him, you‘ll wake him up." And when they did, Franko was deadly as the best of them. . But in this miniâ€"series, Lemieux wasn‘t, which is too bad because off the ice he came across as a fine young man, very aware of the pressures and expectations resting on his shoulders. He was patient with reporters, gracious to a fault in fact, and like Gretzky, aired a maturity beyond his tender years. But like so many great racehorses, he must learn to avoid the tendency to loaf, to glide the ice in cruise control, to wave his stick at harderâ€"working, lessâ€"talented foes. oIf iledvo;;,vMaâ€"no Lemieux will one day be counted among the allâ€"around great ones. _ _ _ _ _ . _-h;-tvi-fvfleo“[;l;&;liilixé he did last week, he and his pals in Pittsburgh will disappear from sight faster than a snowball in hell.
