Brennan made key saves late in the game to preserve the 4â€"3 victory for his club, its first in 10 years of organized minor hockey. Rick Campbell photo Rick Campbell Chronicle Staff After their nailbiting 4â€"3 win over Mississauga in Sunday‘s Gold Puck midget tournament final, St. Catharines players threw their sticks in the air and erupted in a mob scene around goalie Rob Brennan. _ You could hardly blame them â€" after all, it marked their first ever tournament win in 10 years of coming through the minor hockey ranks. And it meant that for the third consecutive year, the St. Catharines midgets have walked away with top honors in the Midas Muffierâ€"sponâ€" sored event. > "Yeh, we were told by everyone back in St. Catharines that we were twoâ€"time champions (at that level) and that we were expected to win," said happy St. Kitts coach Brian McDonâ€" ald outside the winners dressing room. ‘"And now, after 10 years, these guys have finally won one, maybe now they have experienced the feeling, they‘ll just get better from here." In the second of three finals played Sunday, Toronto Wexford nipped Sarnia 21 in the juvenile contest while Hamilton wrapped up minor midget honors by drubbing Peterborough 6â€"2. _ McDonald, and any number of St. Catharines parents, were as surprised by the outcome as elated with it. You see, their charges are struggling to maintain a .500 clip in league play back home. And it certainly wasn‘t as if they devastated the opposition here either. St. Catharines made their way to the final with a 4â€"2 win over Windsor, then a 2â€"2 sawoflf with Waterloo and 3â€"3 tie with Stratford. In that latter contest, they were forced to rally from a 3â€"1 deficit. "No, we didn‘t play well at all that game, we had to get those two goals to tie and our other goalie (Todd) Morrison, not the one who played Morrison‘s sidekick Rob Brennan was no slouch either in the final, making a handful of key saves after Duffy Melson potted the eventual winner, a powerâ€"play tally at 6: 38 of the third. lan Dobbrindt was the St. Catharines MVP and Gord Donlevy the Mississauga :;d-n): stood on his head out there practically to keep us in it. He was sensational." ‘"Defensively as a team we‘ve had our mblflm. offensively we can run up the goals we tried to convince the kids here of the need to play better in our own end to win. We tied them (Missie) 7â€"7 in exhibition, but it was too wide open, we can‘t compete in shoo! matches like that." said McDonald. Long time coming and the feeling was great St. Kitt‘s cops Gold Puck Penalties cost Peterborough in the minor midget game as Hamilton broke things open in the third period. Bob Heppenstall, who had two goals for the winners, was named their MVP while John Town took Peterborough honors. In juvenile play, Colin MacDonald broke Sarnia‘s heart with the game winner with only 22 seconds left and overtime looming. He, along with Sarnia goalie Andy Morrison, were selected MVP. Waterloo‘s midget entries went winless in the tournament. The minors lost 8â€"0 to London, 7â€"1 to Welland and then got nipped 4â€"3 by Peterâ€" borough. The majors, in addition to their tie with St. Catharines, dropped a 3â€"2 decision to Stratford and 4â€"3 loss to Windsor. Coach Don Dreisinger‘s juveniles made the most respectable Waterioo showing, narrowly missing the final. They edged Galt 2â€"1, knocked off Welland 6â€"2 and then simply couldn‘t hit the range in a 2â€"1 loss to Sarnia, the game which vaulted the winners into the final.
