Young honored by WTC for fine tennis accomplishments 'TLTruaveturarotavictsam.a-o-etetwa-tetTatetemctuha-t-Jtthet Grmtetaettttamtta#tttyotmg'-rtrattt. ___ _‘__ .- And now it seems club members will be seeing a lot more of the portrait than the player. A Richard O'Brien Chronicle Staff Young, who also has her own copy of the portrait, is the first and only player to be honored by the club in that way. The club executive decided to have the portrait done after she won the Canadian under-I8 championship in August in Vancouver with a tra, 6-3 win over Rene Simpson of Toronto. During that stay. she might enter a tour- nament called the Coetrederatioet Cup and will certainly compete in the Orange Bowl (tennis. not football) after that. And then. just to show how much she's stepping out to test her wings.. she‘s-leaving on the first of January to go to University of Mississipi on a tennis scholarship. _ In the lounge of Waterloo Tennis Club. between four black. and white portraits of honorary life members. there now hangs a portrait of Jane Young. And it's in living color. It was taken try photographer David James back when the weather was right for outdoor tennis and presented to Young at the club's recent annual banquet. Young will be leaving Waterloo and her grade 13 studies at Kitchener-Waterloo collegiate and vocational school to go to Florida for a Mb-day training camp. All this"; means the time is coming for decisions concerning her future in tennis. decisions based on how well she does against American competi- lion. Young has little experience against Ameri- cans, hm did compete in September in the us. Junior Open, where she lost in the first round. "Competitiem's really tough." said Young. "it takes a while to get to know everybody. The bottom line on plenum heaters. lt average home a 140sq. m. tapproximately 1500 sq. Hopefully when I go to Florida it'll help me adjust for the big (university) tournaments." The toughest player Young has faced so far has been Toronto‘s Carling Bassett. who has had extensive training south of the border. Young lost 6-2, 6-3 to Bassett in the Canadian Open in Ottawa. Young also lost to Mary Dailey of Pennsylvan- ia when the Waterloo Tennis Club hosted the Western Ontario Open this summer. More recently. she beat Carol Culik. also of Waterloo. to take the Central Western Ontario high school championship. So she's leaving. but not without saying she's also leaving all doors open in case she eventually decides to come home and take up where she left off in grade 13. , But if she likes it and stays and eventually gets on the pro circuit. there's always her picture on the watt. aa0Attterttttmet,Watertoo 884-0550 WWII!
