(No replacement for value of seat belts ) _ We are all creatures of habit. Unfortunate- ly, only about one in no of us has acquired the habit of wearing a seat belt every time we drive or ride. There are always ex- cuses: they're awk- ward to put on and fasten; they're uncom- fortable; they move too much; they move too little; Ijust didn't think of it. Excuses yes, but not reasons based on facts. The modern seat belt is well-conceived, com- fortable, easy to fasten and untasten. If an accident in- volves fire or submer- sion, you're more like- ly to escape it you're conscious and not sur fering from broken bones or hemorrhaging due to severe impact. It you think you‘d be safer being thrown clear of the car in a collision, check the facts. Real-life experi- ence has shown that you are 25 times more If you don't buckle up each time you drive or ride you are literally betting your life that an l accident will not occur. It you th safer be clear of , collision facts. Re: ence has When a collision occurs. the unre- strained passenger re- ally faces two colli, sions. The first is a crash between the ve- hicle and another vehi- cle or obstacle. The second occurs when the forces of motion launch that passenger like a guided missile toward the dashboard. wind- shield, steering wheel, or a fellow passenger. A child sitting on the likely to die lap of an unbelted mother can be, and has been, crushed between the mother and struc- tural parts of the auto- mobile. If a car crashes at 30 mph, the unbelted pas- senger can smash into the dashboard with several thousand pounds of moving force. In the event of a head-on crash with an- other car also going 30 mph, the total forces involved are equivalent to impact at about 60 mph. You can imagine what happens when flesh and bone meet steel under those con- ditions. One of the myths about seat belts is that they are not needed when traveling at low speeds or when going on a short trip. The fact is that more than so percent of all accidents occur at speeds less than 40 mph. Non-belt- ed occupants of cars have been killed in crashes at speeds as low Is 12 mph. At just no mph, the force of impact is equivalent to the force involved in catching a annound has of ce- ment tossed from a first-story window. As for a short trip not requiring buckling up, it's another fact that three out of every four fatal accidents happen within 25 miles of home. Surveys have been taken and conclusions drawn as to why no more than " to 12 percent of the riding public wear seat belts, but it's not easy to determine complex human motivations with absolute cer- tainty. The truth prob- ably lies hidden come- where between sheer inertia and the illusion of immortality. Nobody really thinks he‘s going to die behind the wheel. Perhaps that is why it happens with awesome frequency. Experience has been good in the 29 countries and Canadian prov- q Heavy boot: warm socks. o A change of ing and socks. Check q CB radio. .
