Seen through the eyes of three foreign correspondents (Nick Nolte, Joanna Cassidy and Gene Hackman), Under Fire is a vivid depiction of the illâ€" fated Sandinista revoâ€" lution of 1979. But most of all it is an intense indictment of the futiliâ€" ty of war, a futility typified by the senseâ€" less slaughter of innoâ€" cent people, where even the mercenaries can‘t decide which side Anyone with any doubts about the qualiâ€" ty of life or government in this country would be wise to check out Under Fire, a fast paced thriller set in war torn Nicaragua. If anything, you will probably leave the theâ€" ater with the feeling that being a Canadian isn‘t so bad at all. Guelph Rotary Club will hold its third annuâ€" al Fine Art Auction Thursday, Nov. 3, at Guelph Holiday Inn, with a preview and reception at 6 p.m. and the auction at 8 p.m. Ross MacDonald Chronicle Special ‘"Our committee has been able to attract a number of wellâ€"known local and area artists, while Mike Kelly will Guelph Rotary Art Auction Under Fire starkly captures realism of war atrocities Somoza‘s presidenâ€" tial platform, while adâ€" vocating a democratic form of government, is nothing more than a facade for a violent military junta. With the aid of his right hand henchman (Jeanâ€"Louis Trintignant) he sysâ€" tematically executes anyone seen as a threat to his power. When Nolte and Cassidy eventually diagnose the cancer, it becomes only a matter of time before the safety of all journalists in Nicaraâ€" gua is jeopardized. they‘re on Nolte and Cassidy arrive in Nicaragua unaware of the severiâ€" ty of the situation but it isn‘t long before they are committed to exâ€" posing the murderous regime of President Somoza. The voice of the peo ple is Raphael, a reclu again assist us as aucâ€" tioneer," said Bill Tayâ€" lor, this years chairâ€" man, who with a Jack Reid framed limited edition print as door prize and an entertainâ€" ing evening expects a full house with proâ€" ceeds in support of Rotary community projects. Movie Review Nolte and Cassidy become entangled in the web of terror as they attempt to get the film into proper hands. Their predicament beâ€" comes a microcosm of the war. Like the naâ€" tive Nicaraguans, there is simply noâ€" where for them to turn and no clear cut indicaâ€" tion as to who their allies actually are. A tragic turn of events takes place when Hackman (who is separated from Casâ€" sidy and has recently returned to the States) returns to Nicaragua to interview Raphael. With the internal unrest at its peak, he is gunned down, but not before Nolte can reâ€" cord the event with his camera. Nolte is perfect for the part as the devilâ€" mayâ€"care photograâ€" pher who will risk anyâ€" thing to get his pictures on the cover of Time. While it is difficult for him to avoid being piâ€" geonholed as the hungryâ€"man dinner type who likes to crush beer cans on his foreâ€" head, this is afthcr in a string of solid perforâ€" mances. His screen sive opponent of Somoâ€" za‘s insidious policies. Although we never acâ€" tually see Raphael, his spirit and presence on placards and buildings represents the driving force behind the revoâ€" lution. presence and the conâ€" viction he brings to his roles make him one of the most charismatic actors in the business. Cassidy gives a surâ€" prisingly credible perâ€" formance as Nolte‘s colieague and love inâ€" terest. She gives warmth, strength and a sense of levelâ€"headedâ€" ness to the character, something that is a prerequisite in the life and death profession of the war correspondâ€" ent. The tanks, burnt out buildings and crowded slums are bleak reminders of the barbarism that exists in this culture.
