Do you often wake up with a morning headache, feeling stiff, sore and slug- gish? Chances are, the culprit is not last night's party, but poor sleeping posture, said Dr. John Peever, a Kitchener chiropractor.' Chlorucle Stan "If you have trouble getting a good night's sleep, if you wake up in the morning tired, stiff or with a pain in your back or in one of your limbs, you may be the victim of poor sleeping posture," he said. The average Mr-year-old has spent about no The average 30-year-old has spent about 10 years or one-third of his/her lifetime in bed. Yet, while a great deal of importance is attached to maintaining good poture during the daytime hours, little attention is given to the eight hours spent in sleep. In visiting schools in the Waterloo Region during a recent Posture Week. Peever said that an alarming number of children admitted suffering from morning headaches. Lately, a growing number of people are also coming into his Kitchener office with symptoms ranging from a sore back to arm and leg pains. "You can connect many of the problems they are having to sleep," he said. "When the problem is corrected, the symptoms are alle- viated." Invariably, many of the people suffering from these symptoms admit that they sleep on their stomachs. Stressing that this is the worst possible sleeping position. Peever said that stomach sleepers tend to suffer from morning headaches. stiffness, arm and leg pain or neck and lower back problems. "Studies have shown that you don't h good a sleep," he said, adding that sleep the back or side is a more natural p causing less stress or strain to the spine. Maintaining good postural habits during the daytime may be simply a matter of conscious effort on the part of the individual, but, said Peever. stronger measures may need to be taken to improve sleeping habits. The most obvious ingredients to a good night's sleep are often overlooked as people scrimp in buying a mattress and pillow, he said. A good mattress should be comfortable, yet firm enough to give well-balanced support. Ones that are too hard or soft can seriously affect quality of sleep. Choosing a suitable pillow, one that is neither too thick or thin, is also important. in Peever's opinion. Using one's arm as a pillow should be avoided since it cuts off circulation and puts stress on the arms, back and shoulders. Peever also encourages regular exercise. proper nutrition and periodic checkups of the spine and nervous system, particularly for children, "to make sure everything is function- ing properly. If you can correct problems when people are young, you are going to have a healthier spine and nervous system," he said. Doctors of Chiropractic concentrate on body mechanics, particularly on the muscular and neurological aspects of the human body. Ac- cording to Peever. members of his profession regard pain as a warning signal and, rather than covering it with medication, try to discover its source and correct the problem.
