Rocking Chair club mutually rewarding St. Raphael‘s Nursing Home member Emma Struth cradles her Rocking Chair Club ‘‘*grandson‘"‘ Jimmy Whitehead at Sunbeam Home. e Chronicle Special For the past four years the children of Sunbeam Home have been enjoying more of life‘s experiences that many often take for granted. Thanks to the help of a number of senior citizens known as the Rocking Chair Club, some of the "exterior stimuli®‘ that for some everyday occurrence now becomes a reality for the children of the Home. The Home, a 70â€"bed facility located in the City of Kitchener, provides care for developmentally and severely handicapped children. This Schedâ€" ule II facility operates under the umbrella of the providing developmental programming serâ€" vices, in addition to residential health care. Caring is why a group of seniors (women and men) meet for one hour at the Home every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings. Coming from several local nursing homes (St. Raphaels, Central Park Lodge and Sunnyside), it is estimated that each has averaged 100 volunteer hours annually. As volunteers, these "grandmas and grandpas" enjoy their weekly outing, and wait with great anticipation for "Rocking Chair Club®" day to arrive. The city of Miami Beach is well named. It‘s eastern edge runs eight miles along the Atlantic Two of the eight miles have been reserved as public beach parks. where swimming and sunning may be enjoyed practically every day of the year. Lifeguards are stationed at intervals during normal dayâ€" light hours as a safety precaution With water surrounding the city. every Miami Béach vacationer has accommodation either right on the beach or within a short walk of the ocean. There‘s no lack of water activities. Skin and scuba diving are popular. Several boats cater to diving parties. Coral reefs not far south of Miami Beach include picturesque marine garâ€" dens that are a favourite with divers. Water skiing is done in protected areas of Biscayne Bay and sailboats may be rented by the day or week at the Dinner Key marina on the mainland‘ Florida bound? And then there is the personal satisfaction that each senior has, knowing that they have contributed to "their‘ child‘s wellâ€" being. The seniors can be seen sitting in a rocking chair, cuddling their special young child, as they rock back and forth. Talking, touching, smiling, soothing, singing, storyâ€"telling, all provide stimulus for each child. Because of the acuteâ€" ness ofâ€"handicaps, perhaps a touch, a sound or movement will bring a reaction. Most of the children cannot verbally express how they are enioving the ‘"‘Rocking Chair Club", but it becomes evident by their smiling faces, sounds _ and expressions tht a need is being met. _ The seniors may have been apprehensive at first but once involved they are pleased to be a part of the Club. As one senior has said when she was first approached, she didn‘t know what to expect or how to react â€" "I said 1 would go once and try it, but after 1 started going, I loved it, and now look forward to it every week." ‘"‘The program has been well received and supported by our friends, the seniors. We plan on continuing," said program supervisor Karen Hutcheson.
