Melodee Martinuk f Chronicle Staff The knack â€" some guys have it, some don‘t. What‘s the knack you say? Its that special something some fellows have that gives them the edge when it comes to picking up girls. It is also the subject of the first production this year by the UW drama department, which from October 18â€"23 will present The Knack, a comedy by British playwright Ann Jellicoe. Written in 1960, the play recounts a few hours of one day in the lives of three university students who board together. _ > ‘"The main topic of discussion for these three guys is how to date women,"" explained director William Chadwick of UW‘s drama department. ‘"One guy is fantastic, he‘s got the knack with women. The second hasn‘t got a clue â€" would love to have the knack and is always trying to get pointers from the first guy. The other is an artist who doesn‘t care about the knack and only want the innocent one to have a healthy attitude." A young woman enters the scene and then the chase is on. The question is, who gets the girl and how does he do it? According the Chadwick, while it is a comedy, the play has an underlying message "relevant to modern concerns. It says something &which needs to be said about sexual relations." Starring in this production are Ned Dickens, a UW English graduate as "the macho guy" Tolen, UW student Bruce Beaton as Tom the artist, Robert McAuley of Wilfrid Laurier University as Colin "the young innocent‘" and Kristiina Valter, a UW engineering student as the young woman, Nancy The Knack will be presented at 8 p.m. in UW‘s Theatre of the Arts, located in the Modern Languages Building. Tickets are $5, $3 students and seniors, and can be obtained through the Humanities Theatre box office, 885â€"4280. Saturday, Nov. 6 the drama students will present their major production of the term, the children‘s classic the Wizard of Oz. 7Z/AMFIR Best in aports & movies on our Sateilite Giant Screen k.
