Ross MacDonald Chronicle Special There are certain things in this world that appear to be inevi table. Taxes, soap operas and overâ€"paid athletes are three that immediately come to mind. Add stupid hor ror movies to the list The House on Sororiâ€" ty Row is this month‘s Friday the 13th/Prom Night entry, a sordid, sometimes comedic at tempt to insult the moâ€" viegoer. Writer/direc tor Mark Rosman may have set out to shock our senses but his bla tant overuse of worâ€" nout scare tactics beâ€" comes so predictable it‘s humorous. The entire affair is an amateurish homage to the tried cinematic techniques â€" associated with this genre. JOIN THE PARTY! The plot is about as fresh as a year old jujube. As expected, what starts out as a simple college prank turns into a nightmare. The sorority sisters deâ€" cide to turn the tables on their dorm mother, a repulsive woman who There‘s the missing body of Diabolique, the thing that wouldn‘t die from â€" Hallowe‘en, the campus residence complete with attic from Black Christmas. Add the usual dose of gratuitous violence and giggly adolescents and you have the zillionth version of ~things that go bump in the nifl%l.” Unfortunately, _ Ros man fails on all counts Whereas the . previous three toyed with our innermost fears, House on Sorority Row barely skims the surface. Welcome To The Area‘s Largest Exotic Entertainment Lounge Eileen Davidson (Ashley Abbott of The Young and the Restâ€" less) is the only familâ€" iar face and she‘ll probably regret this one. Her character is has the girls in someâ€" what of a dither. It seems she has lost a few marbles due to a traumatic experience years earlier and. as such, has little pa tience for the pyjama party antics of our sassy coâ€"eds. But when the caper turns sour, the film becomes a comedy of errors as the naive Gidgets attempt to conâ€" ceal their misdeed. The only thing worse than the practical joke is the acting. The charâ€" acters fumble around aimlessly, like the Litâ€" tle Rascals trying to hide an apple pie. nothing more than the Abbott brat, transâ€" formed to the big screen. Like the maleâ€" domineering shrew on the Y&R, she grits her teeth and barks out orders with absurd regularity. However, the assets she does reveal, while not relatâ€" ed to acting ability, will surely appeal to male fans of the soaper. In fact, it seems highly unusual that the proâ€" ducers have failed to use her T.V. persona in ads for the movie. The mass popularity of the daytime show would surely be a big plus at the big office. Not only has Rosman been blessed with bad actors, but also with his own inability to effectively use the eleâ€" ment of surprise. Each subsequent scene is so The house on Sororiâ€" ty Row is currently playing at The Cinema in Kitchener. **And that kids.," as Count Floyd would say, ‘"is pretty skeddy stuff." utterly predictable, it is like reading ahead with a script. The only indication of any foreâ€" boding is that the movie itself may outâ€" live the girls. . _ The House on Seroriâ€" ty Row has all the qualities of air condiâ€" tioning in a igloo or killer bees at a pool party; unnecessary, uncomfortable to sit through and generally unenjoyable. It is one of those films that would be better suited for television. At least the commercials would provide a welcome break.
