PAGE ti - WAYERLOO CHRONtCLE, WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 26. 1983 Second Class Mail Retttstratiort Number 5540 Porn lies. The distinctive buttons worn by participants in the K-W Status of Women's weekend conference said it all. While portraying women in a degrading light, pornography not only gives an inaccurate and insulting picture of women, but ol human relationships in general. Bor nie Diamond, founding member of the Ottawa-based Coalition Against Media Pornography, who spoke at the conference Friday evening, shocked her audience with a series of film clips depicting scenes of rape, torture and murder. But equally disturbing were the statistics she provided revealing the massive size and influence of the pornography industry. Figures showed, for example. that the industry grosses about $10.5 billion annually, more than the movie and music industry combined: that approximately 200 hard-core and 260 child pornography magazines are available in North America and that children as young as three years of age are forced to take part in pornographic movies. Diamond recommends a multi-faceted approach to dealing with the pornography problem. everything from writing to local MPs demanding stricter obscenity laws to organizing boycotts of local stores who carry pornographic material. But, she said. the key is involvement. The pornography industry has in her words been allowed to "flourish" too long, aided by our lack of resistance. op a local level, municipal governments should strictly supervise the sale and distribution of pornography, said Diamond, requiring licences for businesses who handle such material and enforcing regulations on how it can be displayed. Establishments dealing only in pornography should be off limits to minors. Similar actions by city governments in Ottawa and recently in Cambridge have proven successful. As Diamond pointed out, until now our laws have done much to protect the rights of racial minorities but have been slow to provide equal safeguards for women. Our society may profess a commitment to ensuring dignity and equality for all of its citzens but, until it provides some protection for women under its laws governing hate literature, which porn surely is, then it's difficult for that commitment to be taken seriously - especially given the thriving nature of the porn industry today. Where do the summers go? I know where the winters go. They go on and on and on. But Canadian summers seem to pounce out of a frigid spring. flourish like an exotic plant. and wither and die two months late‘r. It's time that our civic leaders and local residents reaffirmed their commitment to women's equality - with their involvement in this worthwhile cause and with action.
