Prior to the introduction of Pay TV at the start of the year, the industry had predicted an 18 per cent subscription rate in its first year. MacAlâ€" pine said these projections had been inflated **because no one knew what to expect ... what we were doing was introducing a completely new system, completely new programming to the country â€" it was just a matter of flipping coins. _ Numbers taking off as Pay TV â€" _â€" finds its spot in local market _ Melodee Martinuk Chronicle Staff After a slowerâ€"thanâ€"expected start, Pay TV is beginning to take off in the Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo area, says Don MacAlpine, executive viceâ€"president and general manager of Rogers Cable TV, Kitchener. By the end of the first seven months of the service, almost 12 per cent of cable television subscribers in the area had already purchased pay service and, by this time next year, Rogers expects pay subscriptions to jump to 22 per cent, he said. "It‘s been a success. Not perhaps as successâ€" ful as people initially thought it would be, but a success," concluded MacAlpine. ‘"When you consider that nationally one out of every 10 households with cable service has already bought the service, it‘s phenomenal â€" far beyond what happened in the United States when they kicked it off there,"" he added. MacAlpine remarked that locally "there is no question it‘s (Pay TV ) going to be a success this fall. We‘re having trouble filling orders, we‘re so Rogers is currently in the midst of a major, sevenâ€"week national campaign promoting pay and cable service. ‘"...the best value for the dollar of all Pay TV channels available in North America...we‘ve just far more to offer." 886â€"2933 Uâ€"SCI Aâ€"2 Disk Drive $299 Shugart $Aâ€"455 379 (1/2 Height for | B M ] Tec Mar 5MB Cartndge Drive 1995 Wizard Printer Intertace 95 RF Modulator 10 Zenith Monttor 129 Dysan SS, 00 4 Hayes Smartmodem 1200 879 Hayes Smartmodem 12006 195 Hays Smartmodem 300 379 UNBEATABLE PRICES ON ALL PRINTERS, COMPUTERS & SOFTWARE Coming Soon!!! Consultants believe that Canadian Pay TV "is the best value for the dollar of all Pay TV channels available in North America ... we‘ve just far more to offer," said MacAlpine. Rogers Cablesystems offers both First Choice and Superchannel and MacAlpine noted that, as of August, the two channels were in a neckâ€"andâ€" neck battle locally as well as nationally for subâ€" scribers. And as for the future of Pay TV, MacAlpine said, although applications are before the Canadian Radioâ€"Television Commission for allâ€" news and allâ€"sports networks among others, these won‘t likely be approved for some time yet. ‘"There just isn‘t the subscriber base to support any additional services," he said. The main reason behind this surge in public interest is the everâ€"expanding selection of programs available on Canada‘s two pay channels, MacAlpine explained. busy we can‘t answer the phones." Rogers has budgeted for future local market surveys to determine why people are or aren‘t subscribing to Pay TV and what types of programming people would like to see offered. He added that an unexpected trend which has developed in this area is that Pay TV has found a significantly larger market in Cambridge than in other communities Rogers services. "It‘s baffling, especially in view of the fact that we don‘t even have an office in Cambridge. We can‘t explain it," MacAlpine said. Offer for portraits taken Mon.
