D Richard O‘Brien Chronicle Staff They didn‘t get the job done in exactly the same way as during their exhibition game a week ago, but guess which football team won the Battle of Waterloo for the 12th consecutive year. Yes, it was the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks who made it an even dozen with an 18â€"3 victory over the University of Waterloo Warriors, the host team Saturday afternoon at Seagram Stadium in the Ontario Universities Athletic Association opener. And although Laurier had gained more yards passing than rushing the previous week in Guelph, this time the purple and gold squad picked up nearly four times as many yards on the ground (191) than passing (52). Offeï¬se, however, was not a big key to the game as both teams‘ defensive units shone. Laurier‘s Roy Kurtz led the offence with three field goals, two of them from 10 yards. . The Laurier defence supplied the game‘s only touchâ€" down, and it came late in the fourth quarter when defensive back John Poole intercepted a pass from Warrior quarterback Stan Chelmecki and ran the ball 30 yards to the end zone* Both teams‘ defensive units had their moments of triumph. Late in the first half after Hawks had recovered a Chelmecki fumble on the Warrior sevenâ€"yardâ€"line, Hawks were stopped on three consecutive tries for a major, the last one being a goal line stand on the oneâ€" yardâ€"line. Then in the fourth quarter Warriors were knocking on the door from the Laurier 11â€"yardâ€"line but failed to score a major at a time when a twoâ€"point conversion would have lifted them to an 11â€"11 tie. It was Kevin Adams who put Warriors in scoring position with his second interception of the day off quarterback Mike Wilson. "I always say you win on defense early in the season and offence late in the season,"" Laurier head coach Dave ‘"‘Tuffy"" Knight said afterwards. "The defence played very well today. "I thought we played like a young team. I was disappointed we didn‘t throw the ball a little better or score at the end of the first half." o ‘i'(l;lihte‘xl;la-m}dthere was confusion on their third down and one touchdown try when quarterback Wilson called a keeper play that wasn‘t in the Laurier playâ€" "(vii‘télmecki. meanwhile, wasn‘t having nearly as good a day against Laurier as he did against McGill in exhibition play a week earlier, but the defence wasn‘t letting him, either. _ Besides being sacked on some passing plays and under Laurier blockers a lot of pressure on others, Chg|mgckl's receivers were Warrior defence. no(ca‘tcï¬lng the ball with gi'eat regularity ‘"We think we have a much better offence than that," said Warrior coach Bob McKillop. "We had five of six passes dropped at key times. O "Our receivers dropped passes that normally they‘re going to catch. I‘m seriously concerned about that." Warrior‘s best try for a major, following Adams‘ interception, ended with Chelmecki trying to reach an open man in the end zone but throwing short under presâ€" sure. McKillop was much happier with his defensive team as Hawks failed to score an offensive touchdown. _______ _ _ "Our defence did everything it was asked to do," said McKillop. The Warrior offence did come up big on one play in the third quarter when Chelmecki completed a third down pass to Art Heier at the Laurier 20, but that only led to a missed field goal. Laurier blockers create a gaping opening for Rob,Pecora to run the bail up the mldglo against the WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER However, the first quarter ended with Laurier leading 3â€"2 as Kurtz kicked his first field goal and Chelmecki managed two singles, one on a missed field goal try. . Hawks continued scoring in one and threes to lead 8â€"2 at halftime. Then another Laurier field goal in the third quarter and Warrior single in the fourth set the stage for Poole‘s major. Warriors opened the game with an onside kick that failed, but they seemed to move the ball well on their first series of downs. Warriors finished with a total offence of just 225 yards, 53 gained by rushing and 172 passing. Chelmecki was good on 12 of 33 pass attempts. Wilson hit on six of his 18 passes.
