‘Just a hobby‘ but ceramist wins two awards Melodee Martinuk Chronicle Staff If you meet Helen Schaade some time, don‘t be too surprised if she has a decidedly satisfied air about her. After all, wouldn‘t you be pretty pleased with yourself if you had picked up two major awards in the space of just four weeks? _And that is exactly what this Waterloo ceramist has done. First. on April 16 one of her pieces won the overâ€"all first prize in the professional class at the Southâ€" Western Ontario Ceramics Associaâ€" tion annual competition in London. Then. just two weeks ago Schaade earned two first â€"place awards in the professional competition of the Ceramists and Hobby show in Toâ€" ronto. Not bad for a woman who does ceramics only as a hobby in her spare time and certainly doesn‘t consider herself a "professional"‘ by any means. "I was really surprised â€" I didn‘t expect to win this time. The compeâ€" tition was really tough," said Schaade of her Toronto win. * The Swissâ€"born Schaade first exâ€" perimented with ceramics as a youngster in school but it wasn‘t until a little over five years ago that she began to actively pursue it as a hobby. Now Shaade admits, she‘s "hooked" on it. "It‘s so exciting â€" so fascinating. Once 1 did my first piece 1 was hooked and since it has just gone on and on," Schaade said. Schaade‘s specialty in ceramics is scraphitto, which means she carves shapes and figures into a ceramic form. She glazes her works herself, and thoroughly enjoys experimentâ€" ing with underglazes and overglazes to create innovative, unusual efâ€" fects, firing the finished pieces in a kiln at her home. Her prizeâ€"winning Toronto entries were a brown and ivory plate and a white and blue decorator box, which took top honors for its glazing. To ensure that she stays ahead of the competition Schaade regularly takes ceramics classes in order to expand and update her skills. "You never learn it all," Schaade said. ‘"There‘s always something new that comes out ... a new technique I just have to try." In fact, ceramics is not the only hobby Schaade does in her free moments: she is also a compulsive knitter, does crossâ€"stitch and has won awards for her handâ€"made dolls. With the successful Toronto and London competitions behind her, Schaade is now busy in her studio at home preparing a new collection of pieces for this year‘s ceramics show at the Central Ontario Exhibition. Each win, Schaade says "gives me more spirit to go on"‘. _ ~ J _ oOPEN DAiILY § (weon _ ____ _ im «> a MAY 24 Operations Centre, Union and Maple Streets, Kitchener Traffic Signal Computer MAY 25 Greenbrook Pumping Station, Stirling and Greenbrook, Kitchener Water Supply MAY 26 Laboratory, Regional Road #17, 2 Miles South of Bresiau Liquid Wastes @ International Bazaar @ C aleteria (200 seat) © Safari oasis (licensed) Drive your family wild!
