Kommerling, the parent company in Germany, looked high and low to find the perfect spot to set up its Canadian subsidiary. Erik Thomsen, a native of Denâ€" mark who has lived in Kitchenerâ€" Waterioo for 16 years, was espeâ€" cially pleased that Waterloo was Kommerling‘s first choice. In March he became the general manager for Komecan, which set up operations at 607 Colby Drive. It‘s often said that you can‘t successfully sell a product unless you believe in it 100 per cent. For Thomsen, the appointment at Komcan gives him an opportunity to manufacture and sell products which he believes in 110 percent! Komcan makes windows and doors using white polyviny]â€" chloride (known as PVC) to conâ€" struct the frame. According to Thomsen, PVC doesn‘t rot, fade, warp, twist, peel or flake. It never has to be painted and "can‘t get dented." Each frame contains multiple air chambers, which act as.insulaâ€" tors to keep cool air inside the building in the summer and outâ€" side during the winter. For sturdiness, Komcan‘s frames are built with a rod of galvanized steel inside the largest chamber. The product is so duraâ€" ble, says Thomsen, ‘it will last longer than the house itself." His windows are a breeze to clean, the Waterloo resident exâ€" plains. Inward opening sashes enable easy cleaning from inside the house. And special tilt and turn double opening mechanisms are available for added cleaning ease and to provide ventilation with minimal draught. Currently the Waterloo plant employs ten people and occupies 5,000 square feet. But if the products become as popular as the company hopes. the local plant will be expand _: quickly. Komcan custom builds its prod ucts for commercial and residen tial use. "We can do just about anything," says Thomsen. Locally, a number of model homes have been built using the Germanâ€"based products. ‘"The reâ€" action has been very favorable." Thomsen notes. The largest de mand for Komcan‘s doors and windows is presently in new homes. But Thomsen predicts that about 50 per cent of their business will be from replacement windows in buildings where wood, steel and other types of frames have seen their lastâ€" days. "Ours is the replacement |window you never have to replace." he adds. ‘"In Europe, our windows are very common."" And Thomsen hopes that trend will eventually spread to Canada. Why people start new businesses and how they go about launching their new ventures is an everâ€"fas cinating subject. Gisele Murawsky of Pommel Gate Crescent just opened a shop called Byâ€"theâ€"Sea Swimwear, lo cated in Westmount Place Shopâ€" ping Maill. Here‘s the story she reâ€" lates. Her husband owns the Eimira Stove Works in Toronto and she has been working with him, priâ€" marily as buyer for brassware and other accessories. The challenge has been enjoyable, but Murawsky says: "I have been looking for something for quite a while to sort of go out on my own" in the business world. Then in February things started to click. Murawsky searched Kâ€"W stores, looking for a bathing suit for a Florida vacation. "I couldn‘t The Inside Track KARLA WHEELER find one here so went to Toronto." She found just what she wanted in a small bathing suit store. "As my daughter and I left the store, I turned to her and said, ‘That‘s the kind of store 1 want.‘ " That next Monday, ‘"my husband phoned Rosemary Reid (a Toronâ€" toâ€"based bathing suit manufacturâ€" er) and asked, ‘How do I get my wife in the business?" " From there everything fell right into place. Murawsky says it‘s been "unbeâ€" lievable"* how helpful and supporâ€" tive everyone has been â€" particuâ€" larly suppliers. Without this coâ€" operation, her business would never have gotten off the ground. She is especially appreciative of the support shown by friends, family, Westmount Place managâ€" ers and store owners, and even people such as her hairdresser and dentist, who sent congratulatory wishes the day she opened her swimwear shop. Byâ€"theâ€"Sea Swimwear carries a variety of women‘s beachwear lines, including Rosemary Reid, Dotti, Sea Queen, St. Raphael, and others. The store has regular sizes 5 to 20, and also sells maternity, mastectomy and tall girl fashâ€" ions. As well as featuring a wide selection of bathing suits, Murawsky also has sun dresses, coverâ€"ups. shorts, tops. and other activeâ€"wear items. In August or September,. she plans to offer a very, very good line of lingerie." Also in the fall, the store owner hopes to stock a full line of cruiâ€" sewear. The hottest seller in Byâ€"theâ€"Sea Swimwear is the bikini. I‘ve been surprised the number of bikinis I have been selling.". Murawsky says. Suppliers and other retailers had told her that bikinis weren‘t popular items this year. Oneâ€"piece suits. particularly those with high. cutâ€"out legs. are in style. "But a lot of people are even buying two bikinis â€" one for tanning and one for swimming," she adds. Each time 1 have had the opportunity to interview a senior business student involved in the Small Business Consulting Service at Wilfrid Laurier University, one thing stands out â€" the student‘s professionalism. This week was no exception. as J talked with Lindsay Wahl, a fourthâ€"year business student who is coâ€"ordinating eight other stu dents currently involved in the service. Wahl phoned to say that the consulting service is again offering a fullâ€"time staff for the summer months. The nine consul tants are available Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 For now, the business woman is featuring female fashions only. ‘‘*Many people ask why I don‘t also start carrying men‘s," she relates. "If I had a bigger store..." But in the next breath she indicates she‘s quite happy having a small store. *You can look after the customer a little better and give a more personal service this way." The Small Business Consulting Service is a nonâ€"profit. Ontario government funded program. whose mandate is to provide low cost assistance to small business. And equally important. according to Wah!, is the mandate "to be of service to the community . For $6 an hour, an existing business can receive professional advice on almost any facet of running a business â€" accounting. finance, costing, production, mar keting, promotion, time manage ment, office procedures, etc. The service is also available to anyone who is contemplating starting a business of their own.
