What you may not be aware of is that each of these products is a potential environmental hazard when they are put out with the regular garbage or washed down the drain. Saturday, May 14 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Region of Waterloo will hold a Community Special Waste Day at the Waterioo Landfill Site when residents can bring their hazardous wastes for proper disposal. "We‘re saying to homeowners, if you have these materials don‘t just throw them out. Bring them to the landfill site so they can be collected and specially treated â€" many can be recycled and the rest will be properly disposed of," said Doug Hickman of Resource Integraâ€" tion Systems Limited, a Toronto firm coâ€"orâ€" dinating the special waste day. In general, Hickman said, all products marked corrosive, flammable, reactive or extraâ€"strength should be brought to the landfill site on May 14 for disposal. Materials that will be accepted include: acetone, bleach, chemicals, disinfectants, furniture stains and strippers, gasoline, glue, herbicides, insectiâ€" cides, pesticides, outdated medication, oil, paint and paint removers, swimming pool chemicals plus any leftover household cleaners.
