What you may not be aware of is that each of these products is a potential environmental hazard when they are put out with the regular garbage or washed down the drain. Saturday, May 14 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Region of Waterloo will hold a Community Special Waste Day at the Waterioo Landfill Site when residents can bring their hazardous wastes for proper disposal. "We‘re saying to homeowners, if you have these materials don‘t just throw them out. Bring them to the landfill site so they can be collected and specially treated â€" many can be recycled and the rest will be properly disposed of," said Doug Hickman of Resource Integraâ€" tion Systems Limited, a Toronto firm coâ€"orâ€" dinating the special waste day. In general, Hickman said, all products marked corrosive, flammable, reactive or extraâ€"strength should be brought to the landfill site on May 14 for disposal. Materials that will be accepted include: acetone, bleach, chemicals, disinfectants, furniture stains and strippers, gasoline, glue, herbicides, insectiâ€" cides, pesticides, outdated medication, oil, paint and paint removers, swimming pool chemicals plus any leftover household cleaners. "There are a lot of things in the home that if properly used according to the instructions are fine. But they shouldn‘t just be poured LLS SHER FROM NOW UNTIL JUNE 18th, 1983 ON GOLDWELL AIRMOBILE FOAM PERMS CATHERINE It takes only a few parts of pesticide or oil to contaminate a million parts of water. Impropâ€" er waste disposal, Hickman explained, can result in damage to sewage treatment plants, pollution of the environment and can threaten the safety offour drinking water. down the drain," Hickman said. The Community Special Waste Day is just one part of a $220,000 program undertaken earlier this year by the Region of Waterioo and Environment Canada to improve waste management procedures. "The Region of Waterloo has spent a lot of time and money trying to keep hazardous waste material out of the landfill sites and the sewer system. They‘ve been very successful in encouraging industry to clean up their waste disposal and now they‘re encouraging residents to do the same," Hickman said. Residents wishing more information about particular wastes or the Community Special Waste Day can telephone the Pollution Laboratory Hotline, 885â€"9500. Hickman also warned that materials brought to the landfill site on the community waste day should be separated and, if possible, labelled. "It is potentially dangerous to mix many of these materials," he said. "They can start off a chemical reaction which can create poisonous fumes or an explosion." A Mississauga firm, Mosaic Chemical Corporation, will be at the landfill site May 14 to collect and dispose of the wastes. _ _ The Community Special Waste Day is a first in Canada, and Hickman said, if successful it will be a regular feature in Waterloo region and may be copied by communities across North America. A second community waste day is planned for the Cambridge Landfill Site Saturday, May 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. , THURS., FRI., 9:30â€"9: pm KATHY
