Carroll was responding to critiâ€" cism levelled last week by trustees during a meeting of the Waterloo Board that council members have been interfering in matters not in their jurisdiction and politicking at the board‘s expense. At that time, Board Chairman Paul Haney announced that he had sent a letter to Carroll offering to meet with her and provide her with additional background information about the Brighton issue. _ "I would like to emphasize for the benefit of the community that the issue of school closing and alternaâ€" tive uses of schools is a matter within the sole jurisdiction of the board, not of city council," he said. But Carroll said that she has no intention of "bothering the board staff" for more information, adding that she has been well briefed by Rob Deyman, city policy planner who has served on each of the accommodation review commitâ€" Chronicle Staff In an effort to compile the most upâ€"toâ€"date demographic data possiâ€" ble, a committee of residents are planning to conduct a survey of the Brighton school catchment area. Enrolment predictions used by the Brighton/Elizabeth Ziegler/Northdale accommodation review committee were based on 1982 assessment figures, explained Brighton parent Janice Murray. The survey, consisting of about seven questions, is designed to define the kinds of families living in the Brighton area,; the number of children in each family, projected family size; how long the families have lived in the area and how many families are planning to move from the neighborhood in the near fuâ€" ture. The group of residents and parents was organized after a reâ€" port from the accommodation reâ€" view committee studying the enrolâ€" ment problem at three core area schools recommended closure of Planned Parenthood annual meet Planned Parenthood will hold its Annual General Meeting on May 12 at Unitarian House, 136 Allen Street East, Waterloo. The meetâ€" ing begins at 7:30 p.m. and the public is invited to attend. Guest speaker, Connie Clement, a family planning coordinator with the City of Toronto will discuss the role of Planned Parenthood in the future. This will be a good opporâ€" tunity to learn more about the importance of family plann!ng. 0 Family Unity Month in Ontario During the business meeting the Board of Directors for 1983â€"84 will be presented and additional noâ€" minations accepted. Several volunteers will be recogâ€" nized for their special contribuâ€" tions to Planned Parenthood. May has been ‘groclnimed as Family Unity Month in Ontario by News digest atchment surveyed Carroll said that her interest in the Brighton school matter or any other school closing is directly related to planning issues within the city. She emphasized the interâ€" dependence that exists in the funcâ€" tions of the board and council, particularly in the planning of new subdivisions and in the sharing of recreational facilities. "They are inseparable. We have to work together on these things," she said. â€" _ Carroll called trustees charges that council members were politickâ€" ing "totally unfair." _ "We were approached by the neighborhood. They came asking for our support and they got it," she said. ~ Carroll said that her concerns were centred on the number of parents directly involved in discusâ€" sions on the closure of Brighton, the future of a private nursery school currently using the Brighton facility and how the school property would be used. Residents came to council conâ€" cerned about the future use of the school property and the impact of closure on the neighborhood. Brighton school in June, 1984. Armed with a petition containing the names of more than 650 Brighton area residents, the group persuaded the Waterloo County Board of Eduâ€" cation to postpone its decision on the school to allow further study of the matter. A new committee was established by the board to examine the specific problems of Brighton school, to respond to the concerns of parents and to study alternate uses for the school. iininen es "They considered it a community issue. I‘m concerned about the neighborhood and that‘s my responâ€" sibility," the mayor added. Residents met last week to study information that has been collected about Brighton and to appoint five parents and one Brighton area resident to represent them on the new committee. One of the repreâ€" sentatives chosen, Emily Hunsâ€" berger, also served on the original committee. The group expects to be visiting homes in the Brighton school area within the next week or two and, says Murray, ‘"we are hoping for the same coâ€"operation as we received from the petition."‘ the provincial government. The structure of the traditional family â€" mother. father and two children â€" has changed dramatically during the past decade. However, the institu tion of the family, however you define this, continues to survive and it remains the major social influence in our society. _ Family Unity Month offers ev eryone the opportunity to reflect on just how important the family is to‘ the wellâ€"being of community life.
