Chuck attributes his style to jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, who after seeing Mangione play at the tender age of 15, gave him one of his own horns. something Mangione treasures to this very day. The little horn player was also creatively swayed by the genius of John Coltrane and Miles Davis and countless others. This was jazz for jazz‘s sake. _ ""You know. it was always a wild feeling playing that room," he said. "It was capacity filled and the people came for the music. It had a wonderful atmosphere." â€" 1t was a wild feeling Saturday at the Centre in the Square, when Chuck Mangione and company played to a packed house. He played everything from Chase the Clouds Away, Friends and Love. Children of Sanchez, and last year‘s Love Notes, to his soonâ€"toâ€"be released Journey to a Rainbow, his first album on the CBS label. Mangione and his musicmen were next to perfect. He produces excellent music, Love Notes and Journey to a Rainbow being recent solid vinyl proof. But live, he‘s dead. The soul of the music is lost, the comph is crying to be heard and Mangione doesn‘t pay it any heed. The melody is getting redundant often bordering on sterile. Chuck did chat with the radiant crowd but he was either tired from touring or indifferent, almost machineâ€"like. He was just too wellâ€"rehearsed. The lith Commandment, another newer selection had inklings of The Sound of Music‘s My Favorite Things in it, and Children of Sanchez, a melody that went gold after three weeks, was outstanding but it was again Vadala‘s sax that saved it. = The contemporary pop/jazz moment lasted for two hours, and Mangione dedicated 70 Miles Young to Papa Frank Miles Mangione, who was in the lobby s_ig_ning Love Notes for his And everyone in the conventional Centre crowd was ecstaâ€" tic. tb daviont « nb ichils Bcb ic hi c ocm e aitiniati oc t. Vadala‘s sax was up to lukewarm but for Papa Mangione‘s tribute it was hot! _ _ _ When the little man from Rochester played Feels So Good, the instrumental blockbuster which made him a household word, the Centre audience went wild. That was what they had come to hear. _ And this is what Mangione is going to continue to give them:; the best synthetic pseudoâ€"jazz in the business.
