Dealer of the Year. c Rick Campbell Chronicle Staff It‘s not everyone, you know, who can lay claim to being the ‘"top gun"‘ of all the "top guns". But Buttinger can. And that‘s because Buttinger was honored at the recent Midas Canada Inc. annual convention in Hawaii with the prestigious Don Reid Meâ€" morial Trophy, awarded annually to the Dealer of the Year. If anyone has the right to bust his buttons with pride these days, it has to be Fred Buttinger. Buttinger is in good company. The trophy, named in memory of the first Midas Muffier dealer in Canâ€" ada, was won in 1982, its inaugural year, by Reid‘s son Peter at the company‘s convention in Puerto Rico. Don Reid passed away four years ago and the trophy was created by his wife in memory of both his outstanding achievements over the years and his pioneering of the first Canadian franchise, which he purchased in 1959. "In Canada, they‘ve had sales awards for about six or seven years, but until this, there were never any awards for outstanding dealers," said Buttinger last week from his Waterloo Midas Muffler office, one of three shops he operates in the area. ‘"This award is a great honor for me, because it‘s not just for selling, it is for overâ€"all achieveâ€" ment." Buttinger‘s name has long been in the spotlight locally with minor sports. His sons Gord and Paul are both outstanding athletes, and for the past six years Fred has lent his company‘s name and support to the wellâ€"run Gold Puck minor hockey tournament,. as well as any number of minor sport teams. One of the best examples of the regard Midas brass has for the congenial Waterloo operator was witnessed last year when Buttinger was asked to travel to Germany. A massive transaction had brought three â€"muffler chains in Belgium, Germany and Holland under the Midas 1,2,3 logo and Buttinger was asked to give a presentation to the various dealers in attendance, esâ€" sentially dealing with how he had But Buttinger feels it is the image he has projected over the 15 years he has been with Midas in the Kâ€"W area that has placed him in such high esteem within company ranks. Hard work pays as Buttinger wins top Midas award progressed over the years ‘"They knew I was German origin, that I spoke German, and they feel 1 represent the ideal Midas image, how you can become successful through plain, hard work," said Buttinger., joined in his office by his lovely wife Vale, a constant aid in both family and business matters. ‘"When 1 was speaking over there, you could hear a pin drop, that‘s how much they were listening." Upon his return to Canada, Butâ€" tinger received many letters of thanks for his genuine presentation. including some from upper echelon Midas executives, and Fred feels the impression he left with everyone served him well re the Reid award. In fact, many claim Buttinger has replaced Reid as the authoritative figure at such gatherings as convenâ€" tions and so on. Previously, Reid had always thanked the company for their time and efforts at the end of each convention, but after his death, the thank you‘s went by the board at the 1978 event in Palm Springs. Well, almost went by the boards. "I saw that everyone was getting ready to leave, so I got up, I said ‘hold it everybody, I want to say a few words from the dealers to the company," said Buttinger. ‘"They always look to him (Fred) at the conventions, he‘s like one of the apostles,"" said Vale proudly. It was that kind of takeâ€"charge attitude that motivated Buttinger to get John "Moose‘" Quade in town last year for Oktoberfest and again for the Midas Gold Puck tourney. TV‘s "top gun‘‘ commercial anti hero, who lives east of San Francis co, was so taken with the local Gemutlichkeit that he wore a Midas Gold Puck tourney sweater on his return trip home. ‘I support a lot of minor sports, I feel very strongly that if people, especially young people, are in volved in sports they don‘t have the time to run around and get in trouble," said Buttinger. That‘s the kind of response you‘d expect from a man who works hard, treats custome satisfaction as top priority, and who plain and simply "loves" what he‘s doing. Fred Buttinger may have the Midas touch, but being honored as the best in the business wasn‘t an honor handed him on a silver platter. He earned it, fair and Rick Campbell photo
