Gaels get taste of local net naillbiter It comes as no surprise to those who have been there before, but it is possible to put several Cameron Heights players on one team in a high school basketball allâ€"star game and have an outcome too close to call. Yet that was the case Friday night as the Golds â€" among them Dave Kipfer, Rob Froese, Marcel Naus and Andy Balogh from the Ontario champion Cameron school â€" managed a narrow 75â€"73 victory over the Greens in the ninth annual Waterloo County basketball clasâ€" sic. Three players from Waterloo coliegiate were on the winning side. Second team allâ€"star Todd Smith made his second appearance while Owen Roberts and Sean Tuckett were both there for the first time. "They were bigger than us, man for man," said Smith. "We knew it would be a close game." I 0 â€" _ Smith remembered last year‘s game when one team had six Cameron players, including Phil Guthrie and Marcel Naus‘s older brother, Frank, but lost in a similarly fastâ€"paced conâ€" test. Kipfer, playing his last game in the packed gym before going to Providence College on a full basketball scholarship, led scoring with 24 points. ~ Froese, who also graduates this year, added 18 points and was also presented with the Mike Moser Memorial Award as the league‘s most valuable player. Kipfer was last year‘s winâ€" ner. Late in the game Eastwood‘s Ron Lugowski hit for one free throw to bring the Greens to within one point at 74â€"73, then Froese sank on free throw with 19 seconds remaining to end the scoring. _ S Balogh and Rob Kent of Preston each had seven while Tuckett had six. Roberts added three, as did Rick Duyzer of Glenview Park. Dave McNeil of St. Jerome‘s was best fot the Greens with 16 and Lugowski finished with 10.
