In 1978 Mangione and 65 of the world‘s greatest jazz performers made a live concert recording at the Hollywood Bow! Amphitheatre before a capacity audience of 18,000 people. In 1979 his album "Feels So Good" went first to gold and then to platinum earning him the title of Jazz Artist of the Year, Instrumentalist of the Year and Outstanding Jazz Artist. At the Eastman School of Jazz Mangione received his Bachelor of Music degree and began recording albums for Riverside under the name The Jazz Brother/Mangione Brothers Sextet. In 1965 Mangione moved to New York where he worked for three years under the eminent Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers. His career began a rapid ascent when the manager of the Rochester Philharmonic Orâ€" chestra invited him to conduct the Philharmonic in a concert of all Mangione music. This concert titled *"Friends & Love" gave him national exposure when it was broadcasted via P.B.S. network. A transition to a major recording label and a 1971 Grammy nomination for "The Hill Where the Lord Hides" served to heighten his growing popularity. Mangione has been involved in music since he began piano lessons at the age of eight. The commitment of his father proved to be a catalyst for Mangione‘s musical development. Papa Mangione would take his sons to concerts in local clubs and then invite the performers back home for spaghetti and wine. As a result Mangione found himself jamming in tife living room with the Who‘s Who of Jazz. Mangione regards Dizzy Gillespie as his musical father and attributes the Africanâ€"Latin flavor of some of his music directly to him. Chuck Mangione and his Quartet will appear in concert at Centre in the Square Saturday, April 30 as part of a 10â€"day crossâ€"country tour. Mangione stops by on crossâ€"country sweep .
