In fact, the City of Waterloo really didn‘t have to make any special effort to become the training site for the selection of the Canadian senior men‘s softball team to compete in the Panâ€"American Games. Waterloo, you might say, just had to be the right place at the right time to be chosen to hold the camp June 4â€"11. We do the approaching because we know what our needs are," said John Stevens, technical director of Softball Canada. Selection, he said, was based on three things. â€" m They needed an area accessible to all parts of Canada and Waterioo is close enough to Toronto International Airport. _ _ It was important that the city have a good facility and it was already well known that Waterloo‘s is one of the best. Accommodation was another consideration and university residences are available in the summer. Softball Canada had also looked at Gueliph and London, Stevens said, ‘"but putting everything together, it came out Waterloo."‘ A total of 30 players will come into town to try and make the 18â€"man roster. And according to Stevens, not one position is assured on the final team attending the Games in Caracas, Venezuela in August. The 30 hopefuls will work around the schedules of local teams, using Hillside, Centennial or even Woodside Park in Kitchâ€" ener for their tryouts. Then on the final weekend they‘ll enter the CHYM‘r tourâ€" nament with two teams of 15. This is the first time a national team has been selected this way. In the past, the reigning Canadian champion was sent, but with inconsistent results. ‘"While we‘re playing and evaluating our own players, it gives us the opportunity to evaluate other players in Ontario who might be potential national team candidates," said Stevens.
