(across from Wilfrid Laurier University‘s Athletic Complex) has been sparkâ€" ing a lot of curiosity. I was driving by the other day and felt comâ€" pelied to stop in and find out who is the *Stanley" behind Stanley‘s Burgers? "It‘s amazing how much attenâ€" tion the sign is attracting," says Stan Huston, the Waterloo busiâ€" nessman who is opening the fastâ€" food outlet next week. Huston‘s restaurant expertise includes owning and operating Ivy‘s in The Waterloo House in Uptown Waterloo for the past five years. Huston, a selfâ€"professed "burger fan," says he‘s "always wanted to get a burger place going which serves a better burger." His burgers will be handmade and homemade, using 5‘s ounces of beef, placed on a fresh kaiser roll, with a host of condiment toppings available. The end result will be "just like the way we make them at home in the summertime," Huston says, eyes lighting up. The "we‘" inâ€" cludes his wife, Donna, a "really good cook" in his words. Stanley‘s Burgers will also offer hot dogs, chili dogs (with homeâ€" made chili), french fries, beverâ€" ages, as well as homebaked brownies and chocolate chip cookâ€" ies. In the future, he hopes to also sell soft iceâ€"cream. The restaurant seats 60 inside, and during the summer Huston will have umbrellaâ€"covered tables available out on the patio at the front of the building. Initially, the outlet will be open Monday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturâ€" day from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. In the fall when university students are back in town, he plans to also be open on Sunday. The location of the restaurant dictates that "the primary market has to be university students," the owner says. He is planning some promotions which will appeal to students. For instance, in May he plans to have a draw for tenâ€"speed bicycles. He‘ll have two of the prizes hanging above the restauâ€" rant‘s doors, and in order to enter the draw "you just fill out the back of your sales slip." Stan Huston, owner of the Waterioo House, is the "Stanley‘‘ behind Stanley‘s Burgers, scheduled to open next week. _ Huston is redecorating the inteâ€" rior of the site, which was formerâ€" ly occupied by Shantz Country Pork Family Restaurant. It was 18 months ago that Russ Erb sold his car and truck repair garage, located in the city core since 1936, to Rick Merling. At the time, 74â€"yearâ€"old Erb dismissed the idea that he was "retiring." The Inside Track KARLA WHEELER "‘I‘m not retired,"‘ he said. ‘"Maybe from the garage I have, but I‘ve got lots of hobbies... so I won‘t run out of things to do." How true! In fact, in recent months Erb has found another "hobby." This one draws upon his expert mechanical skills. A couple of days a week Erb helps out at his sonâ€"inâ€"law‘s busiâ€" ness, "doing handyman chores, keeping things in shape around the shop." Erb‘s daughter, Lynda, is marâ€" ried to Pat Beam, president of Distel Company Ltd. The company specializes in electric motor sales and service. The firm recently combined its Kitchener and Stratâ€" ford outlets into a new, larger site at 641 Colby Drive in Waterloo. Diste} currently employs six peoâ€" ple, occupies 6,400 square feet of space, and is expanding. Accordâ€" ing to Erb, "to the best of our knowledge it‘s the only (motor) rewind shop in Waterioo." The company services industry, rewinding virtually ‘"any type"" of electric motor. The Waterloo plant boasts the most modern pollutionâ€" free burnout furnace available. This is used to burn the insulation off the wiring in a motor so the unit can be cleaned and rewound. Distel offers 24â€"hour breakdown service and free pickâ€"up and deliâ€" very in the immediate area. As well as doing repair work, Distel also custom builds electric motors, including twoâ€"speed and 50â€"Hertz models. The company is capable of making voltage, speed and horsepower changes on units. Distel has a variety of makes, sizes and rpm electric motors in stock, "some up to 200 horsepowâ€" er," Erb says. â€" A sister company, Distel Interâ€" national, is the Canadian distribuâ€" tor for Hawkerâ€"Siddeley machines, with motors availableranging from 150 to 15,000 horsepower. The Waterlooâ€"based Distel comâ€" panies service accounts in Kitchâ€" enerâ€"Waterloo Lambridge, Guelph, Woodstock, Stratford and Toronto, with sales accounts in Alberta, Quebec and as far away as South America. Helping out partâ€"time is fun and interesting, says Erb. "I was in the mechanical end of things all my life. I enjoy going in and watching them rewind and repair motors." And Erb still keeps in close contact with Rick Merling and the other fellows at the Regina Street garage. "I was in there today. I had to have my car serviced." So naturally he took his auto to a place in town with a reputation he can depend upon â€" Russ Erk‘s garage! ‘"They are down there," Erb say wn there," Erb says. Karla Wheeler photo boys
