And even though Wilfrid Laurier hockey Hawks were derailed 10â€"1 by eventual champion Saskatchewan Huskies in semiâ€"final play at the CIAU finals in Moncton Saturday, Laurier coach Wayne Gowing and his troops held their heads high in WLU‘s firstâ€"ever appearance at the national championâ€" ships. â€liuskies, wellâ€"coached and wellâ€"conditioned, won the title convincingly Sunday with a 6â€"2 win over Concordia Stingers. Hawks meanwhile, had won their opening game 5â€"4 over Brandon Thursday but then in Saturday‘s semiâ€"final were bottled up by the smoothâ€"skating Huskies and never did get their game untracked. To their credit however, they maintained their composure throughout in their attempts to comeback, and drew praise from both Gowing and Huskie coach Dave King for their class act. Gowing, who termed the jaunt to Moncton "quite an experience‘‘ for both his players and himself, succinctly summed up the entire week‘s action. _ â€" _ "There were five excellent teams at the tournament â€" and then there was Saskatchewan," he said in high praise of the multiâ€"talented Huskies, who cashed in for the title after two years of heartbreaking lastâ€"minute losses to Moncton. Hawks grabbed a 2â€"1 firstâ€"period lead on goals by defenseman Ray Kremer and winger Greg Mills, and piled in three more in the penaltyâ€"filled second period. Paul Roantree scored an unassisted goal with some hard work around the Brandon net to put Laurier up 3â€"1 and Kevin Casey upped it to 4â€"1 on a fine combination with Dave Beckon and Dan Speck. After Brandon made it 4â€"2, Rob Whistle scored a shorthanded goal to give the Hawks a threeâ€"goal margin entering the third, and they needed it as they suffered seven of the game‘s last eight penalties. Only continued heroics by game MVP Steve Bienkowski, who stonewalled U of T Blues in the provincial final, kept Hawks in the lead as they were outshot 40â€"14. â€" . Against Saskatchewan Saturday, Hawks, down 2â€"0 early, failed to capitalize on a glorious twoâ€"man advantage, and things just went downhill from there as the quick Huskies took over. Whistle had Laurier‘s only goal, from Tim Glencross, while Hawks several times had the misfortune of directing shots off the post. superb season.
