Harmonious two terms for Simonis Five students ran for the position of student federation president in the election, in which 19.7 per cent of the university‘s eligible voters cast ballots. In an election last week a thirdâ€"year English stydent, Tom Allison, was elected federation president to succeed Simonis. Allison and his viceâ€"presidential running mate Jim Pytyck, 24, received an overâ€" whelming 48.2 per cent of the votes cast Equally as important an accomplish ment. Simonis added, is the work done in the past two terms to raise the profile of the university student population in Waterloo and now, he says, "relationships with the community of Waterloo have never been better." Simonis was a thirdâ€"year political science student when he captured the presidency of the student union, a job which he has worked at on a fullâ€"time basis since. Once he hands the reigns of power over to his successor, Simonis plans to resume his studies at UW . Simonis cites improving the image of the student federation,. both with UW students and its administration. as the major accomplishment of his presidency. "The biggest change is the coâ€"operation that there is now on campus. Before arts wasn‘t talking to science. and neither was talking to engineering. Now they all know each other and we‘re all working together." *‘*People now fhvolved with the student union are involved because of the pride they have in the university; they act for the good of _ the whole university. It‘s not just opposition for the sake of opposition. but opposition for the good of the students and the school. That is something that may have been forgotten in the past." he said And the amazing thing is that in this short period of time Simonis has accomplished just about everything he set out to do when he was elected student union president in the spring of 1981 As well, he said, during the past two vears he and his councils have worked to forge ‘"‘the best openâ€"door policy to administra tion of any university. "I feel very good about the last two vears It has been an amazing experience," remarked Simonis in an interview with the Chronicle. "Over the past few weeks we‘ve been reviewing the promises we made when we were running for election and we‘ve been able to deliver."
