Before the centre was opened in 1980, it was expected to operate at an annual deficit of $180,000 and cost Kitchener $337,000 in its first vear. $320,000 in 1981 and $485,000 last vear. "If you are going to do something on a joint basis, you do it from day one â€" you don‘t cry ‘thelp‘ after you are in trouble," said Carroll in an interview with the Chronicle. She was commenting on remarks made recently by outgoing centre manager Geoff Butler that the entire Region, and not just the city of Kitchener, should be subsidizing the centre‘s operations; that it isn‘t "fair‘ for Kitchener taxpayers to be "left alone" to shoulder the burden of supporting a theatre which everyone in the Region benefits from. Carroll added that although Waterloo does not directly contribute to the centre financially, "council certainly has recognized through their grants to arts groups,. especially the Kâ€"W Gallery and the Kâ€"W Symphony, that we have a large number of centre patrons in Waterloo. "It has been Kitchener‘s baby all the way." said the mayor. "They‘ve been very possessive about it." According to Carroll, centre officials had approached Waterloo council for funding once before, just as construction was about to begin, but that request was denied. ‘After it was planned and ready to build, they realized they would be short of funds and came to Waterloo as Johnnyâ€"comeâ€"latelys" she said. Council turned it down, but the feeling at that point was that if you had let us in earlier, the Region could have contributed. The municipalityâ€"funded centre will cost Kitchener taxpayers approximately $722,000, or $5.11 per person, to run this year. Kitchener‘s finance committee has agreed to give the theatre a grant of $592,500 and write off the centre‘s $129,700 operating deficit. "As far as I‘m concerned from day one it should have been a regional project." Last week The Centre in the Square‘s board of directors announced that Scott Walker, who is currently assistant manager of the Hamilton Convention Centre, will succeed Butler as general manager of the centre. Walker was selected for the position, said board chairman F.R. Hoddle because, in his years of public facility management "he has demonstrated his ability to control costs and fulfil the facilities‘ community mandate." Top prices paid for quality LP records.
