New and Improved Programs For 5â€"6 year old boys and girls, a ‘"Soccer Fun" program is being introduced. The basic idea is to provide an opportunity for beginners to become acquainted with the ball, and play in a supervised atmosphere. Teams will be formed, but there will be no coaches, and no referees. Tee shirts, shorts and running shoes are all the equipment required. The miniâ€"soccer fields at Leigh Instruments will be used, with 7â€"8 players per team, and small balls. The attempt will be to encourage the sort of game that might occur in sav a school vard. The miniâ€"soccer (instructional) program for 7â€"8 year olds will continue. boys and girls will play together, with more practices and fewer games. At higher ages, Bantam house league boys will play in a league with the Kitchener teams, and some Kitchener girls teams may play in Waterloo. A Women‘s Soccer Team (age 19 and over) is also being started. We applaud this development, whereby girls who have graduated from our minor system will now have the opportunity to continue playing. 2. Coaching and Referee Clinics. For beginning coaches, an Introductory Clinic is scheduled for Tuesday, April 26th, 7â€"10 p.m. at Seagram Stadium. For experienced coaches, an Ontario Soccer Association Level 1 Clinic will be held in Kitchener, on April 16th and 30th. And an Ontario Soccer Association Level II Clinic will be held in Waterloo, on April 23rd and 30th. For beginning referees, an Introductory Clinic will be held on April 10th and 17th, 2â€"4: 30 p.m. at the Rinkâ€"inâ€"theâ€"Park. 3. Volunteers Urgently Needed. Several areas of our program are in need of volunteer help: conveners for boys and girls house league; referee schedulers for boys house league; canvassers for sponsorships; Ladies Auxiliary; a writer for this Newsletter; and of course coaches and managers. If you are able to help in any of these areas, or need information on any of the above items, please call the office (886â€"1481) at any time. <â€"</ News We make mornings a little easier to get into! Don Button Chronicle Special Throughout the histoâ€" ry of sport, the cocky, overâ€"confident teams always reach their bitâ€" ter end sooner or latâ€" ter.. The University of Waterloo volleyball Warriors‘ bitter end came last Saturday night in the OUAA championship. The host University of Toâ€" ronto Blues were easily the underdogs, but since they had preâ€" viously upset York Yeomen in the OUAA East Final from the same underdog posiâ€" tion, they saw no reaâ€" son why they couldn‘t do the same to Waterâ€" loo. And that‘s exactly what they u_1 sweej the title maiuch in th. â€" straight games. Warriors‘ Jim Lawrie (10) and Owen Jones attempt to block a spike from Paul Cox of the Blues. Don Button photo Blues had already beaten the Warriors twice this season in tournament play, but both times Waterloo was without the serâ€" vices of their setter, Owen Jones. A week before the match, Warâ€" rior head coach Dave Husson had said "we have been playing in The City of Waterloo will be holding minor sports registrations at Seagram Stadium March 5 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registrations will be accepted for boys baseball, boys and girls softball, boys and girls zoccer. boys and girls lacrosse and track and eld. While that would seem a logical stateâ€" ment, it didn‘t hold true for the title match as it was the experiâ€" ence of the Warriors that was their downâ€" fall. Waterloo was exâ€" pected to easily handle Toronto and then proâ€" ceed to the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (CIAU) National Championships. Toronâ€" to knew it, the fans knew it, and the Warâ€" riors knew it. Despite a week of attempts by Husson to have his troops look at Toronto seriously, the experienced and usualâ€" ly reliable starters reâ€" fused to take the hint from the Blue‘s upset of York that Toronto meant business. Even in preâ€"game warmâ€"ups, the Warriors were bouncing around and not taking seriously the upcoming match which was to prompt Husson to say, "there is really no words to describe how disappointed I Toronto‘s 51 lead in the first game soon became 13â€"8 and Waâ€" terloo watched helpâ€" lessly as the Blues took the first game by a 1510 margin. The secâ€" ond game featured the excited U of T troops taking advantage of error after error until they had earned a two game lead in the match by a similar 15â€"10 win. The Warriors almost came back in the third game, rebounding from a 10â€"4 deficit to move within one at 13â€"12, but still more Waterloo mistakes handed Toronto a 15â€"12 decision and the 1983 OUAA volleyball crown. Husson was quick to compliment the Blue‘s contingent. "Give Toâ€" ronto credit, they made very few mistakes and kept the pressure on us the whole match. We didn‘t get good perforâ€" mances from some key guys and most of our experienced guys let us down." He went on to comâ€" pliment the play of Paul Craven and Owen Jones, who played well but not his best, before going on to say that he ‘"appreciates the supâ€" port that we‘ve gotten this season â€" we even had 100 people here tonight â€" and I‘m just sorry that we couldn‘t give them anything in return."
