Book by George Abbott & Douglass Wallop Words and Music by Richard Adler & Jerry Ross By any measure of artistic aims and achieveâ€" ments in movie making, Gandhi is the best picture of 1982. _ _ { O oo Ghandi the best for sure And even limiting its acclaim to the year of its release probably is being unfairly restrictive. Most feature films ever accorded the stature of "best‘‘ seem minor in comparison to Gandhi. For 20 years, producerâ€"director Richard Attenborough has wanted to make a movie based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, the little man who paved the way for India‘s indepenâ€" dence and who inspired millions to adopt nonâ€"violent means of fighting unjust laws. The realization of this dream is a threeâ€"hourâ€" long screen epic that retains the intimacy of a personal drama. Remarkable in its fidelity to Gandhi‘s selfâ€"stated assertion that his life was his message, this picture doesn‘t try to overâ€" whelm its audiences either with spectacle or with the kind of unqualified idolatry that frequently has characterized movie biograâ€" phies. If in concept and execution, most of the credit for Gandhi‘s dramatic scope and power ulâ€" timately must go to Attenborough, the memoraâ€" b.lity of the title character belongs solely to actor Ben Kingsley, who much of the time is so Victor Stanton Chronicle Special Movie Review WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, Thursday, March 3 â€" 8:00 p.m. $11.50 $14.50 $17.50 € / DIZZY GILLESPIE WTHH THE MOE KOFFMAN QUINTEI SUPERSSHOW DIZZN & MOE Price includes 50¢ Caprta! Divided into two parts, each around 90 minutes in length, Gandhi is by no means an endurance test. Many a movie, shorter by half, seems plodding and tedious. That is simply not the case with this picture, which in many respects is as entertaining as it is involving. Only really young children are apt to become restless while watching it. * awesomely believable as to seem to be the Mahatma incarnate. 5 Visually, Gandhi is spectacular without ever indulging in scenery or action photography for effect alone. Everything is complementary to everything else in this movie, and that quality alone singles it out from the vast majority feature films. A multiâ€"category nominee in the upcoming Academy Awards for 1982 releases, Gandhi is a deserving winner of each and every one of them. Entertaining, involving, inspiring â€" Gandhi is all of these.
