The 1950‘s musical comedy will be performed at the school Feb. 23 to * Pet Arbuckie photos Pat Arbuckie Chronicle Staff Familiar songs. authentic sets,. lively dance by an energetic and enthusiastic cast all combine to make WCI‘s production of the 1950 George Abbott. Douglass Wallop musical come dy a wellâ€"rounded evening of entertainment, said the play‘s director Rick Bond. If you have a good sense of humor, WCI‘s musical comedy Damn Yankees to be presented Feb. 23â€"26 is for vou. Next Week‘s four performances of the play are the culmination of many months of work for about 160 WCI students and staff, including a cast of 42 and a 30â€"member orchestra ‘"The musical is put on through the interest of the student body." said cast member Greg Hounsell who described next week‘s production as "the big event of the year." Damn Yankees potential excites WCI performers Planning began as early as last May when Damn Yankees was chosen to be this year‘s production. Auditions for the cast were held in October and rehearsals began in earnest in Noâ€" vember. The musical was chosen because "the cast requirements largely matched the talents of the students," said Bond. _ "It involves a fairly large number of students but not too many to handle." Students, however, said they liked working on Damn Yankees because of the play‘s comedy potential, variety of characters and challenging musical score, which includes songs such as You Gotta Have Heart, What Lola Wants, Lola Gets and The Game which cast members feel is the showâ€"stopper. Faust goes modern ‘‘The baseball players pull together as a unit. You can see the enthusiasm. They want to do well." said one cast member. The plot of Damn Yankees is described by Bond as the â€" traditional Faust legend in a modern setting. Joe Boyd, played by lan Maclean, is an avid fan of baseball‘s Washington Senators who vows to trade his soul to the devil for the chance to lead the Senators to victory over their greatest rivals "those damn Yanâ€" kees." Boyd almost succeeds. As young baseball star Joe Hardy (Mike Pearse). he leads the Senators, firmly rooted in last place,. to second in their league. As the play unfolds, the devil. played by Bob Dietrich, employs many schemes to retain control over Boyd/Hardy. Other cast members include Sybil McKenna as Boyd‘s wife Meg and Janice Hadley as the seductress Lola. And although the preparation for Damn Yankees‘ opening next Wednesday night has meant many hours of extra work not only for members of the cast but also for the orchestra, costume and set designers and the many staff members who volunteered their time, cast members feel that it has been a worthwhile experience for all. ‘"We feel good doing this," said Sybil McKenâ€" na. There is a lot of learning and helping each other. It gives us a good feeling but it also shows the community that we have something to offer." Tickets for the 8 p.m. performances are $3.75 for adults, $3 for students and $2.25 for children. They can be obtained from any ‘"WCI student or by calling the school at 884â€"9590
