Membership has grown to 708 from 235, including 220 in A.R. Kaufman and Waterloo "Y" programs and a new ‘"‘kindergym‘"" program for 66 aspiring gymnasts 3â€"5 years old. The club, which hosted the Southwestern Region Second Qualifying Meet Saturday at its temporary facility in the Lexington Plaza, has expanded in many ways by deciding three years ago on what direction the club should take and then sticking to the decision. Changes began in January 1980, when Kevin Eby began as administrative director and Phil Bruce took over as head coach **We revamped the entire recreational program." Eby said. ‘"We‘ve expanded dramatically in numbers and have a waiting list to get into the club." In three years, the Kâ€"W Gymnastics Club has gone far in one direction â€" up. down and all around. That is. it has gone up in its number of members, down having more members of a younger age group, and all und by working out of as many as eight locations. And that‘s one direction, you ask? Well, in an offhand way and in a broad sense, yes it is. Wh%ur national athletes travel, they take your best coach with them. The emergence of at least one club gymnast ready to compete at the national level would force the club to make new deeisions. Would they send the exceptional athlete to another club or commit more time and equipment to that person? "If you‘ve got six at one level, it‘s an easier decision to make." P Originally, the club worked out of Kitchener collegiate and has since added use of three other high schools and the University of Waterloo facilities. (The temporary facility at Lexington Plaza, the former Zeller‘s County Fair, was provided by Dominion Life and will be theirs until a new tenant is found for the premises.) There are now 43 members of the coaching staff, two of them fullâ€"time and five others working more than 16 hours a week. "I think then you go to a philosophy decision (on whether to) put the resources to work on that," said Eby. ‘"We‘re capable. We know we can train at that level. ‘‘*We weren‘t going to drain one part of the program to feed the other. We‘ve set up a system that‘s solid enough now that we can look into the next phase (primarily expansion of kindergym.)" Tory Holist strikes this pose as she completes her floor routine Kâ€"W gymnasts Marg Whaley and Maureen Weber were first and second with scores of 34.23 and 34.02, respectively. Whaley‘s best score was an 8.70 on vault and Weber was the only gymnast to score over nine with a 9.06 on the beam . The Kâ€"W team was third in the Argo C grouping, where Seija Mallory was fourth overall at 31.77. Her mark of 8.50 on the bars. which was shared by teammate Christie Nowak, was good for a fourthâ€"place finish in that exerâ€" cise. Sunday, club members travelled to London for Junior B competition and finished first as a team with 102.27 points. In Argo B action, Kâ€"W‘s Allison Hiscott was first with 35 points â€" 8.27 on floor, 9.20 on uneven bars, 8.83 on balance beam and 8.70 on floor. Kelly Walberg was fourth overall at 33.23. But back to the present, the Kâ€"W Gymnastics Club managed a first place team finish in Tyro B competition Saturday as Kim Hecktus was second overall with 33.29 and Lee Moore was third with 32.63. Hecktus scored 8.73 on floor‘.and 8.53 on vault while Moore had an 8.53 on uneven bars. ‘*The club is going to develop from within," Eby mainâ€" tains. As for coaching, Eby concedes that someday it may be necessary to hire an elitist coach if there are a large number of members who need elite training, but the club itself won‘t become elitist.
