Lconomice: A special 10â€"part series of films by independent filmmakers on the contemâ€" porary arts is currently being featured at Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo Art Gallery. Local film artist Richard Kerr is curating the series and has managed to organize a broad selection of some of the best experimental films made, many by Southâ€" western Ontario filmmakers. The use of the term ‘"independent" may be unfamiliar to some, and the fact that it is points to an important reason for the series. Independent filmmakers don‘t produce their work for television stations, film studios, sponsors, or clients. Instead they are free to express their own imagination and creative vision in the films they make. Their films are often funded with their own money or arts council grants. The films selected for the series display a wide variety of subjects and styles, such as documentary, fiction, impressionistic, auâ€" tiobiographies, and neoâ€"narratives. An evening was devoted to one of the most significant contemporary film artists, David Rimmer, and three of his films. Also being shown are two evenings of neoâ€"narraâ€" tive films. Films which tell a story but in less conventional narrative forms. Michael Snow‘s feature length film, Presents, will be screened February 23. March 9 features six short films by Rick Hancox. Hancox will be present that evening to talk about his films and the film course in temporal literacy he has evolved at Sheridan College. March 23, John Porter will present an evening of his work plus a selection of Super 8 films from the Funnel Experimental Film Theatre in Toronto. The last evening of the series, April 6 will feature Landscape filmsâ€"Urban films. * All screenings are at 8:00 p.m. sharp every second Wednesday evening. Admisâ€" sion is free, seating is on a firstâ€"come, firstâ€"seated basis with a maximum seating of 120. The series is being presented by the National Film Board in coâ€"operation with the Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery. February 12 1939 he was arrested by the Gestapo, and during his 5% years as a POW in Germany he developed the basic classical harmonica technique. It was this pioneer work and early vio:bn training which became the foundation for his career after the war.when he "made the harmonica into a solo instrument of high artistic worth". A freeâ€"reed instrument, the harâ€" monica has a compass of just over three octaves, similar to the flute, but with the added bonus of several chord possibilities. In the hands of a musician like Reilly it is an expresâ€" sive instrument with a wide range of varied tone colours. In 1967 Reilly designed the world‘s first concert harmonica, a preciâ€" sionâ€"made instrument made of solid silver and built to his specifications by a London silversmith Later Hohner, the harmonica manufacâ€" turers in Germany, took up Reilly‘s patent and this is the design now used for the concert harmonica. Even though the harmonica is a relatively new instrument, it now has an extensive repertoire, particâ€" ularly because of Reilly. His own repertoire now includes over two dozen original]] works by such comâ€" posers as Villaâ€"Lobos and Vaughn Williams. His albums include fasciâ€" nating combinations of instruments such as music for harmonica and harp with Skaila Kanga. In addition to his tours with the Academy of St. Martinâ€"inâ€"theâ€" Fields, Mr. Reilly appears continâ€" ually at music festivals, in concert halls, and on television throughout Tickets for Tommy Reilly are $12, $10 and $8 with reductions for seniors and students. your money‘s worth . . . and more includes 95¢ deposit Portrait Studio BABIES + CHILOREN + ADULTS + FAMILY GAOUPS |\Sears | _â€" touch a loved one 4 d lip» c _ * % , teu Far away or near, someone you love is anxious to see your child‘s changes, so for a special occasion or msi because ... share today with professionâ€" al keepsake portraits taken at Sears WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, AT BENT‘S CAMERAS T 5ï¬ssmoum PLACE ONLY ON SELECTED IN STOCK MOULDINGS LET US CUSTOM FRAME & MAT YOUR FAVOURITE PICTURES, DIPLOMAS, NEEDLE POINT, ETC.
