The vision is that of Jim Henson, the Mupâ€" petâ€"maker himself. and if in plot its a basic amailgamation | of | faâ€" miliar and predictable elements. in its visual execution it is stunâ€" hingly imaginative and innovaltive. The story is set in an imaginary triâ€"solar world inhabited by Skeksis (bad), Mystics (good), Gelflings and Podlings (good), Garthims (bad). Aughra â€" and Urskeks (frightening but basiâ€" cally good). Landâ€" striders (devotedâ€"toâ€" theâ€"death beasts of burden) and Fizzgig (a fluffball monstrosity that is a Gelfling‘s best friend). About the last thing one thinks of while watching the movie The Dark Crystal are the Muppets. Yet. it has been these funny, generally weird but _ always somehow personable. puppetâ€"like creations who have paved the way. both financially and artisti cally,. for this latest animated vision of good versus evil. As screen fare inâ€" tended primarily for preâ€"teenâ€"age audiâ€" ences, The Dark Crys tal seems at times ex ceedingly grim. and very likely to induce nightmares among the very young. This is due largely to the inâ€" credible amount of deâ€" tail seen on the screen alt any given moment. Entire landscapes are presented in such an astonishingly complex vista of colors, moveâ€" ments and sounds that one likely would have to see the movie severâ€" al times to take note of everything. Fans of the Muppets may not be altogether prepared for someâ€" thing quite this difâ€" ferent from Henson‘s other TV and movie puppet shows (includâ€" ing the new television series, Fraggle Rock), but once the initial shock has worn off watching this film can be quite a mesmerizing experience. Despite its predomiâ€" nantly dark, and at times downright horâ€" rific, mood, The Dark Crystal also contains a goodly amount of humor. Its most comâ€" pelling quality, howevâ€" er, is its visual richness which makes it terrifyâ€" ingly believeable. And while the tiny hero and heroine (in the nature of such stories, Jen eagly on discovers he is, %nun- ately, not the last Tiving Gelfling) tend to be rather bland both in appearance and perâ€" sonality. the many other creatures with whom they interact. abound with attentionâ€" holding physical and character eccentriciâ€" ties.
