The vision is that of Jim Henson, the Mupâ€" petâ€"maker himself. and if in plot its a basic amailgamation | of | faâ€" miliar and predictable elements. in its visual execution it is stunâ€" hingly imaginative and innovaltive. The story is set in an imaginary triâ€"solar world inhabited by Skeksis (bad), Mystics (good), Gelflings and Podlings (good), Garthims (bad). Aughra â€" and Urskeks (frightening but basiâ€" cally good). Landâ€" striders (devotedâ€"toâ€" theâ€"death beasts of burden) and Fizzgig (a fluffball monstrosity that is a Gelfling‘s best friend). About the last thing one thinks of while watching the movie The Dark Crystal are the Muppets. Yet. it has been these funny, generally weird but _ always somehow personable. puppetâ€"like creations who have paved the way. both financially and artisti cally,. for this latest animated vision of good versus evil. As screen fare inâ€" tended primarily for preâ€"teenâ€"age audiâ€" ences, The Dark Crys tal seems at times ex ceedingly grim. and very likely to induce nightmares among the very young. Entire landscapes are presented in such an astonishingly complex vista of colors, moveâ€" ments and sounds that one likely would have to see the movie severâ€" al times to take note of everything. Fans of the Muppets may not be altogether prepared for someâ€" thing quite this difâ€" ferent from Henson‘s other TV and movie puppet shows (includâ€" ing the new television series, Fraggle Rock), but once the initial shock has worn off watching this film can be quite a mesmerizing experience. Despite its predomiâ€" nantly dark, and at times downright horâ€" rific, mood, The Dark Crystal also contains a goodly amount of humor. Its most comâ€" pelling quality, howevâ€" er, is its visual richness which makes it terrifyâ€" ingly believeable. And while the tiny hero and heroine (in the nature of such stories, Jen eagly on discovers he is, %nun- ately, not the last Tiving Gelfling) tend to be rather bland both in appearance and perâ€" sonality. the many other creatures with whom they interact. abound with attentionâ€" holding physical and character eccentriciâ€" ties.
