Each of the program‘s 70 volunteers are matched up with a student, and as its motto implies each one teaches one. The causes for illiteracy are innuâ€" merous, said Wright. Some people who never learned to read lived in remote areas and had no access to a school. Others moved frequently or because of illness never managed to pick up the basic reading skills. The reasons may vary but most illiterate people have experienced similar consequences: limâ€" ited employment opportunities, a poor selfâ€"image and fear of discovery. "It gives them the confidentiality that is vitally important," explained Terry Wright, the council‘s current chairman. "It gives them a chance to get started, build a little confidence. When he has attained a high school reading level, the student can enrol in academic upgrading courses. These are currently offered daily at Bluevale collegiate in Waterloo as part of the Operation Open Door program or in Sharon Smith, viceâ€"chairman of the literacy council. Student and tutor meet for two to four hours at least once a week and work through the detailed program together.
