Trio honored for dedication to lifeâ€"saving in province John Aird and Ruth Cruikshank John Aird and Abby Hartman John Aird and Gerry Young Chronicle Special In a ceremony last week at Queen‘s Park, Lieutenant Governor John B. Aird presented Abby Hartman, Gerry Young and Ruth Cruikâ€" shank of Waterloo with the Royal Life Saving Society‘s Certificate of Thanks, Recogpition Badge and Bar to Recognition Badge respec tively. Hartman, Young and Cruikshank,. three of 25 people honored, received their award for their efforts in bringing knowledge of life saving techniques to hundreds of people in the prov ince. Hartman is an Instructor Trainer for both the Aquatic â€"Emergency Care: and Life: Saving Award programs of the Royal Life Saving Society Canada. She is an Examiner to Diploma level, an Examiner Trainer and was named to the 1981 President‘s List. Challenging responsibilities such as these are but one component of her work for the Society She served Kitchener/Waterioo as its Area Chairman from 1980 to 1982, and has developed invaluable crossâ€"links for the Society with other aquatic sport programs and the YMCA in the Area. Hartman has been very active provincially as well. Through 1980 and 1981, she coordinated the design and implementation of the Branch‘s innovative Instructor recertification system. In 1979. she helped coordinate regional lifeguard competitions and in 1980, the Ontario Pool Championships. Her organizational ability and attention to detail led to the smooth execution of these events. Young is an active Examiner to the Distincâ€" tion level for The Royal Life Saving Society Canada. and is an experienced trainer of Instructors and Examiners. During his three years as Chairman of the very active Area Committee in Kitchener/Watâ€" erloo, Young also coordinated the 1980 Ontario Lifeguard Championships, showing great depth of volunteer strength in the volume of work successfully undertaken by his Committee. In 1980, he was recruited by the Provincial Instructor Training Committee where he sucâ€" cessfully developed and implemented the Inâ€" structor Trainer Certification system in use In this season of giving, the students, faculty and staff members of the University of Waterioo and Wilfrid Laurier University extend their thanks to the following local retail businesses for being the first to join the We‘re For You campaign. The campaign is a joint fundâ€"raising effort in support of the two university development funds: WATFUND and EXCELLENCE IN THE EIGHTIES. Shortly after, responding to the need for ties between instructing and evaluating, he joined the Examiner Training Committee as well His experience in lostructor Trainers to share his teaching expertise across Canada. In 1982, Young became Chairman of the Ontario Special Projects Committee with its many and varied tasks and accepted the portfolio of National Examiner Chairman, a testimony to his organ izational ability and leadership Cruikshank is an Instructor Trainer,. an Examiner Trainer to Distinction level, and an Examiner to Diploma level for The Royal Life Saving Society Canada She is a National Lifeguard Service Examiner and one of four National Instructor Trainers in Canada In addition, she was an Ontario staff member. a summer Field Representative from 1973 to 1977. and the liaison officer of the Branch to the Canadian Red Cross Society Water Safety Advisory Committee from 1981 to the present. Her deep involvement and incredible success in the Society might be represented here by one of Cruikshank‘s assignments as Ontario Instrue tor Training Chairman. She assembled, revised, and sold to the nation in 1978 and 79. a firstâ€"time. freestanding Canadian Life Saving Program Instructor training scheme (On that program rested the survival of the Society: the ever increasing numbers of qualiâ€" fied Instructors in our Province that resulted from her work proved her talent and can stand for the many successes that preceded and followed it. Cruikshank brings many valuable attributes to her Branch work. Her words are quick and true, her listening accurate. She has a recall only wished for by most. she runs a tight meeting, and she works and works and works. But two facets of her character that have been constant through her years with the Society must be singled out: her clear thinking, and her unflagging embrace of life itself.
