We'd like to pass on our sincere congratula- tions to one of our Grade ll students. Brendon Duncan. who was recently honored under the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Program. Brendon was one of 12 army cadets to receive a silver certificate of achievement presented by Lt.- Governor John Black Aird. We're proud to know you Brendon! We certainly hope Santa keeps Laurel's Emergency Vehicle in mind if Rudolf has to cancel due to illness at the last minute. Laurel is also busy collecting money to support 28 needy organizations. We collect the money on Fridays by student contributions. Here are some of the organizations that are Bruce Calamide The students of LVS built an emergency vehicle for Santa under Mr. Zenger's supervi- sion. They started to build the vehicle the spring of 1982. It took them four months to complete it. Once again this year hom Dec. 4-31 (exclud- ing Dec. 25-26) Wood- side National Historic Park will hold “Victo- rian Christmas", one of the most popular Christmas celebrations in Southwestern Ontar Each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m, the staff. outfitted in 1890's CON- tame. will welcome visitors to witness all the atmosphere and scenery that makes MOVIE REVIEW Woodside Christmas Victor Stanton Chronicle Special Imagine going to a party and hearing the same people tell the same Jokes they told at a previous party. No matter how funny the people, or their jokes. were to begin with, the second party is going to be something of a letdown The Igtit Airplane was ' hilarious parody on disaster pictures. This year's version merely parrots the original. 7 That'suirriost exactly what happens in the movie Airplane M: The Sequel. 7 Success tends to make sequels inevitable, and in some cases successive pictures are superior to those which spawned them. More often, however. sequel-makers do little more than retrace their own or predecessors' steps. Certainly. that's what Canadian writer-dire tor Ken Finkleman has done in Airplace 11. Taking over from the original creators. Jim Abrahams and David and Jerry Zucker, Finkle~ man has reset the action a little into the future, but slavishly follows the format established in Airplane. The airplane this time is a passenger-carrying space shuttle. and soon, courtesy of a 2001-like computer. it's off course and heading disasv trously towards the sun. Ted Striker, the former pilot whose wartime actions are still haunting him, is again pursuing Elaine, his stewardess girlfriend. and so naturally is on hand to take over the controls of the shuttle after the original crew has been killed off by the computer. Back on earth, the control tower still calls on Chainsmoking McCroskey to oversee things during a potential disaster, and in the same tower controller Johnny Jacobs continues to flit about and make outrageous wiserracks. To talk Striker and his strickened craft down to a safe landing is another of his crazed wartime crew members who hates him. Finkleman seems to have been straining to keep the picture going up to within three minutes of the running _time of the original, resorting to a flashback sequence straight out of Airplane II a slave to original Laurel LOCKER TALK On weekends, hot apple cider and baked goods will be served in the kitchen and Woody. a beaver puppet will introduce all to the festive films in the theatre. In addition, in the modern area the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery "Victorian Toy Exhibition" and artwork by local school children will be on dis, play. this festive occasion so memorable. Sylvia Brown This past week at Waterloo collegiate has simply been overrun with activities and special events; all with a Christmas theme of course, in anticipation of the upcoming holidays. And to top off a week of hoop shooting. door-decorating. eandygram selling and carols over the PA. Vikings attended a fantastic Christmas assembly today, The best entries from the “Write a Letter to Santa Contest" were read. hilarious skits were presented and Christ mas tarols were sung with the accompaniment of the StageBand It marked the end of the 19t12 school year and the beginning of the holidays, Good Luck to everyone in 'tr.? and Merry Christ, mast supported: Foster Child. So far this year we have collected $1.000 under Mr. Kaster's su- pervision. There are two foster children that the school supports: their names are Luteman and Yaneth Diuza. The top seven forms this year so far are: M4 » Mr. Ratz, De - Mr. Kaster. Ml - Ms. Schneider, M9 _ Mr. Snider. the Office Staff. D2 - Mr. Wilson and B9 - Mr. Zenger. Waterloo An annual favourite is the Fowl Shoot in which basketball wizards from all grades test their skill in hopes of winning a Christmas turkey. This year, the birds went to Andrea Prescott of 11A and Rob White 12F. Another annual event that took place was the Door-Decorating Contest. It was extremely successful; in fact, with so many superb entries. judges had a difficult time deciding upon the finalists. After much deliberation. the results were as follows: tied for third place was Miss Meckbachls 133 and Mr. orchard's Ni: in second place. Mr. Millar's 12C; and capturing first was Mr. McCarthy's ME. The winning door undoubtedly deserves special mention: it was a spectacular rn Santa. on sleigh. complete with reindeer that leapt out of the door halfway across the hall Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty, as Striker and Elaine, seem particularly bland in the new Airplane. and most of the time they almost appear to be waiting for laughs, like stage actors. As McCroskey, Lloyd Bridges matches his previous performance, as does Peter Graves, returning " the little boy-admiring pilot, but neither actor is given anything additional to work with. Canadian William Shatner takes over from Canadian Leslie Nielsen (in a differently named but functionally same role) as a moonbase commander, but he's nowhere near as funny. A visual Star Trek gag is, of course, mandatory. (Other Canadians. Raymond Burr and John Vernon. are briefly seen, but to no great advantage. either for audience or their own acting careers.) . Only in the opening sequence - a wild assortment of overlapping up front and back. ground gags taking place as passengers arrive at the airport - does Airplane ll come close to the zany hilarity that was almost constant in the original Airplane. If Airplane took off to soar to new heights in Y'retrn comedy. Airplane ll simply drops a the previous film. _ He also closely copies several of the earlier film's oddball moments, such as having singer Jack Jones pop up singing a few lines of The Love Boat Theme. In the first Airplane, it was Ethel Merman making a cameo appearance with a bit of Everything's Coming Up Roses. Performances this time around, even when the same players are being featured, frequently seem more self-conscious, forcing many of the same gags that seemed so marvellously off-ther cuff in 1”. One of the things that made Airplane so successful was that there was so much to laugh at in it that many people went back two or three times to catch the jokes they'd missed previous- ly. Airplane 11 could use a laugh track just to keep stimulating its initial audiences. bomb td Iihm'eznt; 'r-", (WY .
